So why didn't Hagoromo tell him about Hamura who clearly left descendants behind and helped him save the world?

I didn't know frog sages wrote history books. Not sure how many ninja he actually met, but I doubt in any of the conversations it made sense to drop "Oh by the way, the sage had brother!".

Even if it did, that one true source verse a thousand years of folklore. It's bound to just get lost again.

Well I'm one of these people who believe that Hagoromo is in fact evil so it would make sense for him to leave him out.

The hills that the brothers stand on have bands that look like those worn around Samurai helmets known as Shinobi-no-o - I'm guessing they'e not hills.

Gamamaru probably did know Hamura. His memory isn't what it used to be and he probably thought he was dead.
