They should have had Ino-Shika-Cho do one final formation to hold off Obito to buy Naruto and Sasuke time and also to avenge their fathers. It could have been a beautiful and heartbreaking moment like when Zabuza, Hiruzen, Jiraiya, and Asuma died. Instead Shikamaru just got knocked down like a piece of fodder for no reason. Shikamaru said that the fodders can do something useful if they waited for the right moment and he never got the chance to prove that

Even if he's not actually gonna die, they should still play it like its an actual death like they did with Gaara. Good writers know how to write emotion into their stories and make the most out of major moments.
