Seth MacFarlane talks the end of Stewie and rebooting Star Trek.
October 13, 2011

Family Guy was cancelled, then un-cancelled, and quickly became one of FOX's biggest television properties. So why does its creator, Seth MacFarlane, think the show should call it quits?

"Part of me thinks that Family Guy should have already ended," MacFarlane told The Hollywood Reporter. "I think seven seasons is about the right lifespan for a TV series." Family Guy's tenth season just started last month.

MacFarlane also spoke about how he uses fan reaction as a barometer on when to start the countdown clock. "I talk to the fans and in a way I'm kind of secretly hoping for them to say we're done with it. There are plenty of people who say the show is kind of over the hill... but still the vast majority go pale in the face when I mention the possibility."

There is a deal in place for a Family Guy movie, which MacFarlane is currently writing with Family Guy co-producer Ricky Blitt. MacFarlane is quite keen on wrapping up the series and doing a movie every few years.

"Creatively, that would be the way to do it for me. Do a really fantastic final episode while the show is still strong."

MacFarlane, a huge Star Trek fan, also told THR that he would love to reboot the franchise on the small screen.

"I don't know who would give me the keys to that car," he jokes, acknowledging that, given Trek's recent success on the big screen, he's not sure if Paramount has any interest in exploring TV options. "But I'd love to see that franchise revived for television in the way that it was in the 1990s: very thoughtful, smartly written stories that transcend the science fiction audience."

Do you want to see MacFarlane take the helm of a new Trek series? Do you think that Stewie and Company should sign off? That's your cue to drop some heated debates in the Comments below.

Yeah, me too, but I kind of agree with him, I don't even watch Family Guy anymore, it gets repetitive and a bit boring, though the original seasons were awesome.

Family Guy is awesome, but shouldn't be dragged out. Seth is a smart guy. A Family Guy movie or some type of crossover (Example: Star Wars, the ones the did) would be good.

American Dad is my favorite though.

Well...He has a lot of other tv shows that is truly a hit, but Family Guy is at the top...He could focus on one of the other shows but that might not work out...Seth Macfarlane's taking a big risk here.

I'd like to see a new star trek that is as awesome as next generation was...

I miss those days when I was little and missed school because I was sick, and just sat at home eating soup and watching reruns of Next Generation all day...
