Well it definitely explains a lot. I was completely caught off guard last week when they said the series would end in 3 chapters, but in hindsight it starts making sense why exactly this arc turned up the way it did: they tried to suddenly cram all of it together in one final arc.
Souma's mother, Erina's mother, Erina's existential crisis, that sudden and flaccid character called Asahi that had to pose for Souma's über-nemesis....it was simply all too much, too soon and too superficial for it to work. But if the author suddenly gets the message he has to wrap up the series, then all of it makes sense....truly a shame.
Souma is still only in the 2nd year of education in a total of 3. It doesn't make much sense that they break off the series at this point in his life. The most logical thing would have been to follow him through all 3 years, so essentially they skipped/compressed something that should have taken 1.5 years in this last arc.
Any idea why this series suddenly had to call it quits? I mean it's not like this was some mediocre series.
>Asahi beating souma's dad
>Asahi super powers
>Asahi is a worse villain than erina's dad
>Erina goes from a character that would not let anyone shit on her to become a damsel in distress
>Erina was going to accept Asashi's proposal even though is goes against her character.
>Asahi's character
>Asahi's existence
>Asahi's introduction
I stopped reading SnS after the timeskip because of Asashi and many others do. It was a good manga but now, it's SHIT. Good riddance.
Here is a good summary from a fellow redditor.;
It’s simple: The problems with this arc begin and end with Asahi.
''He’s earned no build up. We haven’t spent enough time with him to respect him as an antagonist, to relish the day we see him be taken down, have a strong rivalry with Soma, or even to see how he’s honed his specific cooking technique to be so inherently superior to everybody else on planet earth. He just... pops into existence one day. All to little fanfare, with vague allusions to his past which will be revealed in full in the future. Oh, and he beats Joichiro, who is established to be the BEST FUCKING COOK IN THE ENTIRE STORY. So having somebody like that curbstomp the person Soma is trying to surpass the most, all within a few chapters, is the cheapest way of establishing a new villain. Since we cannot connect with him, or have learned to at least dislike him as time has gone on, he‘s just so freaking dulllll. He is as good of a chef as he is because the writing demands that he instantly be made out to be Soma’s evil other half, and so Tsukuda seems to be under the impression that means he must be tougher than any opponent Soma’s faced before.
Asahi’s personality traits and skills have already been established, (what little there is to understand about them), so unfortunately, it seems this character is sticking around for a while. However, all that being said... Tsukuda still has the chance to isolate this problem to one arc. I hope he recognizes his mistake and retcons the SHIT out of this particular storyline, because this new character is only dragging everything down with him. I don’t think the manga is awful or anything as it is now, but it needs to take several steps back and ease up on the melodrama. At least for a little while''
This was way before it got axed.
TL;DR; Before time skip it was enjoyable. After time skip, it's actually S H I T.
