Abilities & Sharingan
Throughout Shisui's life he influenced Itachi greatly as a friend, he taught him self-sacrifice and told him that "a true shinobi was one who protected the village from within its own shadow". This probably influenced Itachi in his future actions. Years after his death, Shisui's powers and actions continue to change the world. Itachi also stated that above all else, Shisui wanted someone to inherit his will, something that Itachi sees inside of Naruto.

Background
Shisui was recognized as one of the most talented shinobi in the Uchiha clan. Ao claims that he has fought him in the past, he said he remembers Shisui's chakra and ability to control others with his Sharingan. 6 months after joining the ANBU is when Itachi started acting weird, at this time Shisui was ordered by the Leaf's Military Police Force to keep a close eye on him. Shortly after that Shisui was found drowned in the Naka River with a suicide note saying he was tired of carrying out the clan's duties. The police's number 1 suspect was Itachi who they thought murdered him and forged his suicide note using the sharingan. They didn't buy for a second he killed himself because Shisui was very devoted to the clan, suicide would be something that Shisui just wouldn't do. Itachi then told Sasuke that he killed Shisui and indeed forged the suicide note. All just to to awaken his Mangekyo Sharingan. Shisui's corpse has apparently "disappeared", Kabuto said he can't find it.
However, much later Itachi revealed the truth that Danzo Shimura had already taken one of Shisui's eyes. Shisui then entrusted the other one to Itachi and told him to protect the village. He made it appear that he was crused so their would be no more problems with his eyes(who gets them, etc.). And somehow he later erased his existence leaving no corpse behind.

Shisui was one of the most powerful genjutsu users of the clan. Kabuto wanted to revive him via Edo Tensei because he was so powerful but couldn't get any DNA. Next to Itachi, Shisui was the type of Uchiha who really used the sharingan to its fullest. Shisui was one of the very few members in the Uchiha clan's history who was able to awaken the Mangekyo Sharingan. It granted him access to VERY powerful genjutsu techniques. The strongest one was a unique genjutsu claimed to be the most deadly genjustu, called Kotoamatsukami. This technique allowed him to enter a person's mind and manipulate them by giving them false experiences, making it seem as if they were doing things on their own free will. The victim wouldn't even notice they were being manipulated.
Kotoamatsukami was apparently so unique and powerful, that Tobi wanted it for himself and was PISSED that Danzo destroyed it before he died. Kabuto was also very excited when he learned that the remaining eye was within Itachi's crow.However,this genjustu could only be used once a decade, unless the user was able to use Hashirama Senju's cells to speed up the process from ten years to only a few hours! The clan saw Shisui's eyes as a treasure. That's why before his death he had to make sure it looked like he destroyed them.
