Okay, that is indeed one way to release yourself from Genjutsu... self inflicted pain. Though you can't use your sand to 'automatically' release you from a genjutsu, without first deducing that you are in a genjutsu. The only bios that can break a genjutsu (aside from certain Sharingan Genjutsu) are Jinchuuriki bios like the one I have.
Anyway, certain levels of pain can break your from certain ranked jutsu:
•D Rank Genjutsu can be broken by chipping a Finger (like one does as he bites to draw blood for a Summoning Jutsu)
•C Rank Genjutsu can be broken by low level Physical Attacks, Bitting a chunk of your Cheek
•B Rank Genjutsu can be broken with low ranked Taijutsu/Freestyle
•A Rank Genjutsu can be broken with high ranked Taijutsu, Stabbing Yourself in minor muscle, Cutting yourself, Breaking Smaller bones, Low level Burning/Voltage, Painful Cold
•S Rank Genjutsu can be broken with EIG/Sage level Taijutsu, Breaking Bones, Deep Stabs or cuts, Medium Voltage/Burning, Extreme Painful Cold, Bitting your tongue off
Note that by using pain to release yourself from genjutsu, especially when breaking high ranked genjutsu, you leave yourself weakened and at the point were you might actually die by your own injuries.
If an ally uses the chakra transfer jutsu on you, that will also break you from genjutsu, regardless of the rank. You can also break youself by entering sage mode, activating a full chakra armour, activating a full body surge of chakra (chidori Nagashi for example) and even by activating a curse mark.
Now, in the case of using a full body surge such as Chidori Nagashi, there is a drawback. Since Nagashi is A-ranked, it can only break you from B-ranked genjutsu but it
must be stated that you used it as a full body surge.
Also, before you use any release method, you need to give your characters reasoning for how you worked out you are in a genjutsu. Simply using a release method "just because", is not a suitable reason and will lead you to losing the match.
