There are many shinobi who summon creatures, especially ninken. Out of those, the eight ninken which Kakashi summons are highly skilled. Their sense of smell is many thousands of times stronger than that of humans, and they are especially relied on for tracking missions. By summoning eight ninken at once, it is possible to search in more directions than one can cover alone. In addition, not only do they track above ground, they also use Earth Release to search underground. They are also skilled at capturing the discovered enemy with their sharp teeth.

#26: A different level — The ninjutsu of the Hokage
There are multiple categories of ninjutsu, such as Water Release and Earth Release but essentially, whether those techniques may or may not be activated is influenced by the terrain, and using Water Release someplace where there is no water is nearly impossible. Only shinobi with Hokage-class levels of mastery may free themselves from this law of Nature.
