I think this is the first actual Shinkaigan training thread. So kinda just flying by the seat of my pants here. Let's start with a simple question of what is a Voidseer? You had the bio for a month and probably didn't notice much benefit to having one aside from some extra health points and a little bit of Insanity Resistance. But what are they? Where did they come from?

I feel special, but it means I've got no other trainings to go read for a better idea either. Ah well.

Well a voidsseer is a human that is void touched as a result of Nefarian's prismatic plague. What this means is they can start to learn to understand the void itself. The void is basically where everything came from and where everything returns to.

Unlike all the doujutsu that interact by trauma, Voidseers take a monk to be able to gain their doujutsu by gaining knowledge of the void itself. Through learning and understanding the cosmos, they unlock their visual prowess in the process.

The problem is, with being a mere human, it's a very difficult task, trying to understand the very foundation of the cosmos. So as they try to utilise it, it kinda makes you go crazy, hence the sanity effecting side of all the abilities.

Voidseers learn to harness the void, approaching it with returning things to the void, from where everything comes from, or calling upon the void itself. They learn to use chakra to call upon the void energy but the void energy doesn't contain chakra itself.

Note sure if you've ever seen Doctor Who, but the ability reminds me of when Rose in the series takes the heart of the TARDIS into her body. She can see all of time and space at once but it's more than anything a mere human could handles. Seems a voidseer learns to harness the power of the void in this way, but it takes a lot of skill and resilience to not go insane from the magnitude of what the void is.

From a story point, I'm still catching up, but pretty sure Tiamat came from the void creating her children, the gods. Humans were made and Tiamat wanted to twist them, the human soul was created for humans along the way. Then the gods fought to seal mummy back in the void. Until about 2 years ago when we saw her Avatar in the event. Now we have the voidseers and chris wanting her out I believe?

Pretty solid analysis. The ability is very Lovecraftian by design. It's also why Sanity works as a double edged sword but the user always has the upper hand because of their innate resistance.

Very (very) brief synopsis: Yes, Tiamat was born from the Void and created the gods, her first children. Humans were made by the gods leading up to a massive war between the gods and Tiamat. Two years ago she was released through Imeroth's machinations. But her motives then are heavily suggested to be because of Abzu's machinations, something that is a recent revelation but also has been foreshadowed for the past year or so.

So here's the actual Doujutsu technique. Pretty simple stuff. Some parallels that can be drawn to Sharingan. In terms of power, I'd rank it stronger than Sharingan (hence the 8,000 Kumi value) but weaker than MS.

(Dōjutsu: Shinkaigan) – Eye Technique: Abyssal Eyes
Type: Supplementary
Rank: A
Range: Short – Long
Chakra: N/A (-10 per turn)
Damage: N/A
Description: The Shinkaigan (深海), or the Abyssal Eyes and the Eyes of the Abyss, is the Dōjutsu Kekkei Genkai that appears in the Voidseers. Two conditions must be met to awaken the Shinkaigan. The first is that one must become Void-touched; this is achieved when one becomes Void-touched. The second is by gaining sufficient knowledge of the Shinkaigan and the Voidseer’s innate abilities. This is a key characteristic of the Shinkaigan, noted by Solomon to be “eyes of knowledge” rather than “eyes of trauma,” making it distinct from the Sharingan. The Shinkaigan possesses a unique connection to the Void itself. Its abilities exist in both space and time separately. This comes to be because the Void exists both as a separate dimension and a state in time. Rewinding the clocks far enough would cause everything in the universe to eventually converge onto the Void. The Shinkaigan is the only way one can view the Void directly, peering into it to gain intimate knowledge of the inner workings of the universe as it is today. Without the Shinkaigan exposure to the Void and Shinkaigan Dōjutsu causes one to lose Sanity; though, like a double-edged sword, the Shinkaigan user also suffers a loss of Sanity. But because their eye allows them to perceive and cognize the Void differently from other humans, they lose Sanity at a slower rate. In the left eye the Shinkaigan allows the user to visually perceive lifeforce and lifecycles of anything, including inanimate objects. It derives this ocular power through the nature of the Void itself. The right eye allows the Shinkaigan wielder to view the Void as a physical space, perceiving it not as a point in time but a location. The wielder gains enhanced visual acuity, able to track targets at four times their speed. Though unlike other Dōjutsu it lacks the ability to perceive chakra. Activation of the Shinkaigan grants the user access to their Voidseer Dōjutsu, affording them the ability to use powerful temporal and spatial abilities.
Note: The user is able to passively activate the Shinkaigan after holding the Dōjutsu for one month.
Note: Gazing directly into the Shinkaigan causes a loss of 5 Sanity per turn unless the user also wields the Shinkaigan. Those who have completed Taijutsu training can avoid these effects by breaking eye contact with their opponent.

When choosing the bio I wanted the ability on I struggled with finding the right character for it. I went with Natsu as it’s a bio suited to me and specced fully into fire release as it’s the way I prefer to fight, so when I make use of the shinkaigan my own natural fighting style will regen my sanity on top of the natural resistance. Seemed to work out well.

So much like all doujutsu, after a month I can do it passively which is a good start.

The eyes act as a medium, the way in which you see the void. This is why people lose sanity in looking into your eyes. As you as the user have been using these eyes and trained for a month before the view the void, you have greater resistance to the loss of sanity. People will lose sanity if they make eye contact that is pretty cool as it plays well with the eyes being the medium for the control of the void. The eyes being used to speed up the life cycle of something to revert it back to the void or to summon the void itself as an energy. Chakra is used to summon the void but void energy is not chakra. The eyes increase your tracking by x4 but unlike other doujutsu, you cannot see chakra.

The left eye sees life cycles through it. I spoke to Nk about some stories to explore in the ninja world, is there any way to use this aspect to see the history in a land mark in a sense?

Where the left eye perceives the time aspect of the void, the right eye is connected to the space aspect. Through the right eye, you summon the energy from the void which will be limited to mid range for this level of Shinkaigan. The void energy is like a cross between fire and water in it's a appearance, though an energy with no temperature, it looks like a dark blue/purple energy.

This energy is chaos and with it comes with an aspect of randomness tied to it. The first is you use the roll based system to determine if the damage of the technique is randomly increased or not. The second is you role as the energy takes on the strengths and weaknesses of one of the basic 5 elements. This energy moves at the speed of lightning release techniques.

How do you go about upgrading the eyes to their fullest potential such as the cosmic shinkaigan? Is that through the NW only?

Where it says it moves at the speed of lightning techniques, is the speed defined by the rank of the technique? The chakra of the technique or the damage of the technique?

Example: (Dōjutsu: Kirameku Fuka) – Eye Technique: Shimmering Depths

The technique is A rank, using 30 chakra, but can have up to an addition 40 damage increase based on the roll aspect. When choosing it's speed would it be A ranked lightning speed or F ranked lightning speed because of the damage increase? (I don't know if increasing the power of a technique increases it's speed with boosting)

You'd need a technique specifically to do that. And even then something on that scale I'm not sure I'd approve.

Upgrading to Cosmic is done through completing a Skills Test followed by either a Ninja World Mission or a Battle Test, both are not required.

So it refers to the rank. It works like the speed of any technique in the RP now. See the speed chart for more details on that (specifically the speed of Jutsu). Once you take a look let me know if that resolves your question.

Yeah that covers it, no more questions at this point.

Okay - Shinkaigan's first basic Temporal ability.

(Dōjutsu: Ashi Numachi) – Eye Technique: Reed Marsh
Type: Offensive, Supplementary
Rank: A
Range: Short – Mid
Chakra: 30
Damage: N/A
Description: Reed Marsh is the Shinkaigan’s basic temporal ability, used by the left eye, and is able to perceive and manipulate the lifecycle of what its gaze is set upon. The technique at a basic level invokes the Shinkaigan’s special precognitive ability; more specifically, this means that the user becomes able to predict the future of what the technique itself is targeting. In this sense, lifecycle is broadly defined as anything in existence. Through this technique, or its derivatives, the user is able to gazes at a rock and see it weathered into dust. The user is also able to gaze at a fireball and see its lifecycle, including forming inside the stomach of their opponent, its target, and the resulting explosion. Given that Reed Marsh is the most basic technique within the Shinkaigan’s temporal arsenal it is only able to be used against other techniques and inanimate targets. The essence of the technique is derived from the idea that all things originate from the Void, and that the Shinkaigan can return them to the Void. Through direct eye contact the user can cause a technique up to S-Rank chakra (40) to revert back to the Void. Visually this appears as if the technique is enveloped in a purple energy, consuming it before reducing it to nothingness. Experiencing Reed Marsh directly, meaning sensing it through either one of the primary senses, or through an extrasensory means, causes one to suffer from a 7 Sanity reduction. Reed Marsh can be used four times per battle, with a two turn cooldown between usage.

Why is this technique A ranked and not multi ranked? Just curious.

But this is the basic technique of seeing the life cycle of a technique as everything comes from and returns to the void, you see that and basically speed up the process through eye contact. It works based on chakra, up to 40 chakra (S rank jutsu).

If someone experience of this directly or through a primary sense (Seeing, touching, hearing etc), they will lose 7 sanity.

It's pretty simple to be honest and one of my favourite things about shinkaigan.

Mostly because I don't want people to have more than 4 usages of this basic technique. It can revert up to 40 chakra which covers a range of chakra, like how a multi-ranked technique can. But if I put in multiple lower ranks then it gives too many usages and would become a problem.

So one note - it specifies primary senses, which you list. But what are extrasensory methods?

Chakra sensory, YY sensory, enhanced doujutsu like seeing with byakugan?

Yes; so if it doesn't fall under touch, sight, smell, feel, and auditory then it would count as 'extrasensory.' This technique is a bit of an exemption because it was one of the first canon techniques I made for the field. These days extrasensory will always be lower than standard sensing, usually at half the rate, rounding down. For example, if I were to update this one then it would be 7 direct and 3 for indirect (extrasensory).

Now, you bring up a good question - what about the Byakugan? That does count as seeing? Do you think there's a case to be made for when you see it directly without anything blocking your line of sight vs seeing it miles away or through a wall?

I listed byakugan as I wasn’t actually sure. It’s one of your base senses but heightened and works in a unique way.

If you see it through a wall you’re not seeing it directly through your basic eyesight though so would this count as extrasenory?

So this one is a bit complicated and why I mentioned it. Sorry for grilling you on these examples but it’s definitely one of the more nuanced aspects to Shinkaigan. So I think it’s important to linger on for a moment.

You’re correct. And that will apply broadly as well to other examples. Now here is another one - Inuzuka’s (or it might strictly be AJ’s ability) to taste different chakra types. Don’t quote me on that being the exact nature of the ability because I’m on my phone and digging around for a specific custom or quote of a canon ability will kill me this morning. Do you think this would be direct or indirect?

I figured it best to clear up as much as possible here for reference for future trainings or fights to be honest. I don't mind being grilled, better than messing up.

Would this be a case of, it's not a human's basic sense, where it is enhanced in a certain way, they would suffer the effects of the "Extraordinary" side.

Same with hearing it as normal, then hearing it with inner sonar, as you're enhancing that sense?

Why not simply make it that if you're capable of perceiving it normally, considering the notion that ninja's senses are already superior to that of a normal adult, it is not considered Extraordinary Senses. If you wouldn't be able to perceive it normally, and the only reason you can is because you activated an enhanced sense, then it is considered Extraordinary.

You can't see past a wall normally, but with Byakugan you can. If you see it in front of the wall, you drop 7 points. If you see it behind the wall, you would drop 3 if Reed Marsh was updated.
Same with Inuzuka, if you smell it around you, you drop 7 points. If you smell it 1 landmark away, you drop 3.

Sorry for the spam, just thought it was a very interesting discussion.

While the discussion is appreciated leave it out of the training threads. You can send me this in DMs or just tag me on Discord.

So the answer to this one is that you'd categorize them as direct. They're enhancing the basic sense (same applies to Inner Sonar). It's your regular hearing capability but just put on steroids. Same with olfactory. Does that make sense?

Next up: Death Note eyes but for Modes.

(Dōjutsu: Ensui Umi) – Eye Technique: Saltwater Sea
Type: Offensive, Defensive, Supplementary
Rank: C
Range: Short – Long
Chakra: 15 (-10 per turn)
Damage: N/A
Description: Saltwater Sea, named after Tiamat, is a basic temporal ability of the Shinkaigan. The technique broadly allows the user to view the lifecycle of what they are gazing upon, specifically that of their opponent and any modes or states activated and sustained by them. While this does not confer upon the user the ability to manipulate the duration of those techniques, though it exists in advanced applications, it does allow them to visually understand the duration of any active mode present on their target. This technique is activated instantly, costing a move but not occupying a slot in the timeframe, and lasts for four turns. It can be activated three times per battle.

This follows the same premise of the last technique where you're seeing cycles but for modes. It allows you to understand how long any mode someone is in will last by seeing its "life cycle". It costs a move but doesn't take a timeframe slot. It is a sight that lasts for 4 turns and can be used three times.

This is useful for the next technique that allows you to reduce modes duration right?
