So The Sage Of Six Paths fought the Juubi, and succeeded. But what im wondering is whether he fought it while it was in the form of the tree, or perhaps while it was in its perfect form with the 9 and 8 tails chakra?

Given what we have now, it's hard to draw a conclusion. To say he fought the final form would be committing an act of fallacy because there is no depiction of such, and it was remarked in 646 by Gyuki that the Shinju was the final form of the Juubi. Most likely (based on the depiction of the flashback with Kaguya), he fought the Cyclops version of the Juubi, which is in between stage 1 and 2 (more so stage 1).

Have you read the manga?

Perfect form = tree
Without fruit the tree became juubi , the sage sealed it in his body ( he didn't beat it , that is a fail ), and then split its chakra into 9 pieces before his death.
