Shinji akiri. He is a young man about 14, in the beginning of the series he is introduced as a boy without much emotion, the notion of family, and “home” is confusing to him. As his new mentor misuki, offers him a home he himself is shaken by it,but it grateful for the acceptance of her. During his first assignment, he told to pilot an Ava (a fighting machine to face the first of many Alien fighters (the aliens arrive one by one and arrived due to the self-destruction of the first alien’s arrival on earth.
The Alien exploded placing Humankind into a post apocalyptic position, humankinds only defense against the creatures are AVA’s, which are created from the first aliens attack.) seeing the alien threat he is terrified of facing the alien in single combat; then he finds out his Father is the head of this organization(nerve) that builds the Ava’s, His father mocks him for being weak, and then calls in Rei to take his place. Shinji is stunned to see a young girl no older than he is, lying within a movable bed with IV and bandages positioned around her. Shinji is horrified that his father would force such a young hurt girl to pilot something as dangerous as an Ava.
Shinji quickly tells himself that, “I mustn’t run away” repeating it like a mantra, he then yells to his dad that he will become the pilot and forces himself to pilot the Ava. Shinji’s battle with the alien results in his defeat; however the Ava being a living creature reacted to Shinji and defeated the alien for him.
Shinji awakens in a hospital bed, hurt and confused. He later returns home and later to school. His classmates are questioning his new arrival, and he soon sees Rei again, however the two of them don’t talk.
Shinji is soon assaulted by a boy who believes that in Shinji’s battle with the alien his sister was hurt. (Later on it is revealed that the sister wasn’t hurt due to Shinji) Shinji is later visited by the two boys, and starts to form a bond with them.
One day when Rei is late one day for class, Shinji is told to deliver to her, her coursework. He enters her apartment, after repeatedly knocking and calling out his presence. He quickly makes his way into her room while calling for her. He then notices his father’s glasses on her desk, and picks them up. Rei appears in a towel. Shinji repeatedly apologies embarrassed, but Rei notices the glasses in his hands and tries to seize them, in the process flipping Rei in the air; however she messed up in the flip causing Rei to plummet on top of her.
Rei is really embarrassed, and apologies to her all the way to nerve headquarters. He then tells her that it seems like ever since they metal he did was apologize. He told he felt stupid and dumb and not worthy to pilot an AVA, not trusting the system. Rei asks if he trust his father who created it all, and instructs them. Rei quickly responds in anger seething at his father’s cruelty. Rei responds by slapping him. Shinji does’ know how to respond and she runs away. Misuki later informs him that Rei was once trapped and his father came to save her. Rei collected Shinhi’s father’s glasses that were abandoned by him and kept them as a memento to Shinji’s father. An alien soon attacks and Rei and shinji defeat the alien, but in result Rei is once more trapped and shinji rescues her like his father did, burning his hand and straining himself. Rei doesn’t know how to respond to the kind gesture so for the first time she smiles warmly at shinji.
However after a few battles with the aliens, shinji starts to fear and hates being an AVA pilot afraid that he will mess up and more lives will be lost, so in terror he wonders the city. Eventually meeting up with another boy from class. The boy comments on his bravery and skill, and willingness t put his life on the line for mankind. However since his father rejected him, he quite being an AVA pilot he is forcibly abstracted from nerve. However as things program he meets up again with the boy that assaulted him and the other boy he found around the city.
The boy that assaulted him (his name is too long to spell so I will just abbreviate his name to Touj) and the boy he met outside (another weird name I will just call him Shark) Touj apologies for striking him revealing the truth about his sister and tells Shinji to strike him in Reconciliation. Shinji concedes, but is stops because touj wants him to not hold back. Shinji is driven to tears because touj was wrong he was no hero he was a coward and as he is dragged away by nerve guards he admits his guilt and feat to Touj and Shark.
As he awaits his last train to leave the city, to run from his problems, misuki pulls up, and touj and shark watch. For a long moment there is no movement, not a blade of grass moves, just the sound of the train station. Finally Shinji mumbles, “I’m home” accepting his newfound acceptance and the arrival of his two new friends.
The guys soon go on a tour to retrieve a third AVA to pilot, and meet its pilot, a rude girl name Asuka. Asuka quickly starts yelling at the boys; even it is she herself and is the center of the problem. Shinji doesn’t like her, but at the same time feels some type of connection for her. While they meet her there is another alien attack in which in the process Asuku, Rei and Shinji join together to fight the alien, the alien destroys the majority of the protecting fleet, however misuki’s sharp thinking saves the day.
Shinji’s is soon embarrassed to find out that Asuka would be living with him and misuki, having it been just him and misuki he finds it weird having another member in the house, especially someone as loud as her. Shinji is annoyed and confused by the school-wide acceptation of Asuka, who think she is, “the hottest/coolest/amazing girl in school” Shinji, shark and touj however refuse to go anywhere near her because of her secret rude nature.
As the story progresses Shinji keeps trying to focus on his training, however Asuka’s nagging coupled with his father’s rejection/affection towards Rei, confuses him, and he often lies awake and night depressed. Shinji apologies for everything that goes wrong and Asuku calls him a “weak man” she then tells miskui that he should force him to develop a back bone instead of shying away from problems. Shinji is angry at this and they two bicker. Misuki rolls her eye. An alien soon attacks and Asuku desperate to prove herself attacks it and quickly destroys it, causing shinji quiver in disbelief, however the alien split apart into two beings and quickly defeat Asuka.
Misuki then tells the pair that from that moment on they must synchronize their every movement if they have the slightest chance of defeating the alien. So from that moment on the duo is forced to eat together, sleep in the same room together and dance together, they have to match the rhythm of a song. Shinji feels odd having to accept her being so close. Touj and shark visit and see the duo together and laugh at them and are confused by their antics. However after the scuffle with the alien, they easily match eachothers move defeating the alien with ease.
Shinji however starts to become plagued by thoughts of why am I doing this? Is it right to keep fighting? And why do I do it? In the next battle with the alien he gets cocky thinking he can defeat the angel alone saying that “fighting is a man’s game” infuriating Asuka. The alien however easily defeats him absorbing him into its body. Shinji is low on life support and his team is desperately trying to get him out.
Shinji becomes terrorized by his thoughts wondering why he was here; he becomes overtaken in his depression. Because it is just him and his thoughts, he thinks of his father’s abuse, he remembers asuka’s ill treatment of him, he remembers every quite house, he ponders why people move on why people are happy, he starts to panic and even imagines himself talking to a young versions o himself. He starts hallucinating as he traps within the alien he imagines, Rei, Misuki, and asuku each coming to happen asking him about his desire whether it be love or happiness, they three begin to ridicule/love/help/hinder him, until l finally the spirit of the aVa appears and overwhelms Shinjis the Ava activates just as he can’t breathe, and finally the ava destroys the alien from the inside out.
Shinji’s body however is absorbed into the Ava, and the only way to pull it out is a risky procedure they may or may not work. The procedure starts working but Shinji resists it saying, ‘why should I go back?” his aim emerges and starts destroying the computer mechs. Finally Rei, misuki, and Asuka reappear once more in his conscious, and angrily ask him if he is a man or not and what he wants, and finally if he wants to save the world. Shijnji realizing his duty isn’t finished allows the machines to take him out of the Ava. When shinji reemerges he is greeted by misuki and she throws her arms around him and hugs him.
Shinji soon begins to hear rumor that a fourth pilot will come and join him, Rei and Asuka. Shinji is apprehensive and yet happy about the newcomer, however he doesn’t know the identity of the pilot. Meanwhile the 4th pilot is testing his Ava, when an alien captures it, uniting itself to the Ava creating a powerful combination. Shinji refuses to attack the 4th pilot, even when his father demands him to fight. Shinji refuses to kill another human. So his father launches a program known as the ‘dummy system” which ends up not only destroying the alien, but maliciousously destroys it, scaring almost everyone from nerve and shinji himself. Shinji then begs the dummy system to stop as it holds the pod holding the fourth pilot, but it crushes it. Shinji then took control of the Ava, and refused that the machine would ever be used to take another human life and was about to rebel against his father when his father condensed the life support forcing Shinji to black out. Shinji awakens and finds out that the 4th pilot was none other than touj. Touj survives but barely.
Once more Shinji refuses to be an AVA pilot yelling at his father and screaming in anger. However as he is leaving the city another alien invaders and Rei and Asuka are powerless against its power. Misuki’s boyfriend meets shinji, saying that if he is going to die he wants to be watering his plants. Shinji then sees the alien kill innocent civilians and decides that running away isn’t going to solve anything so he returns to pilot where he barely manages to eliminate the alien.
This event however stays in shinji’s mind and begins to affect him, while Asuka having to be constantly rescued by shinji causes her bravado to dwindle and her dark past comes to light, and her will to pilot an ava and live starts to crash down. Shinji tries to console her, but blames himself for not being there to comfort her.
Asuka soon started to fail so horribly that she couldn’t even make her ava move which makes Shinji depressed. Soon there is only one alien left and just shinji, Touj, Shark went away. He walked alone through nerve until he met the 5th pilot.
The 5th pilot had flawless test scores,a nd became friends with shinji. Shinji connected with him. The 5th pilot told Shinji that he loved him. And it was the first time was told he was loved, and appreciated. However it wasn’t to last the 5th pilot was the last alien. It controlled Asuka’s ava and fought shinji all the way to what the aliens desperately wanted.
Shinji had enough he was tired of fighting and killing of being alone, however as he defeated Asuka’s ava, the last alien was about to activate the device that would destroy all of mankind, when Shinji yelled for him to stop.
The 5th pilot then stopped and told Shinji that he appreciated mankind and that he loved it all, and that humans interested him, he then told shinji that he had to kill him or else he would destroy all of mankind(I don’t understand why)

However Nerve had one enemy left, STEELE a program that will reduce mankind into one mind, and that mind would be shinji. So all of mankind all the humans were destroyed and positioned into his mind where Shinji could do whatever he wanted.
What followed was one fo the greatest counseling sessions of all time. Shinji sought for himself, the meaning of life, his purpose. So he reached for everyone he knew to find out who he was. The scene was of him floating in nothingness, no lines, color, just himself. He saw how meaningless life would be ina world of nothing that occurred or existed. So misuki’s consciousness guided him to draw a line showing him that their was now a limit so now their was a point. Shinji soon started to ask about all the hurts everyone had felt, misuki, was abandoned as a child, asuku’s mother commited suicide in front of her etc. they all told him that there was something more important then finding a “reason for living”
Shinji said, “don’t you all hate me”? asuke replied, “what are you stupid? You invented that”
Shinji then imagined a world where Asuka was his childhood friend his parents were gentle workers, touj and shark were his best friends, Misuki was his teacher, and rei was his love interest/rival. Shinji then held a book and asked, “so this was a possible ending?” misuki replied, “yes, anything is possible.
Shinji then smiled and then realized, “ if you don’t the like the perspective you use to see life change your perspective, if you are ever going to succeed in this life, you need ot love yourself. If you don’t love yourself how can you take care of anyone else?”
