Now, even if they halted the TBB, what's gonna stop it from exploding?

Changing the trajectory means that they aren't in the epicenter of the explosion meaning whilst they would have been wounded, they wouldn't necessarily have been dead.

Not everyone tho, few would have survived, plus I think the tbb needs to hit something real solid before it explodes so he could have bought them some time

First of all the walls were made to not only try n change where it was going plus when it hits the walls the walls will take some of the impact and help minamize the damage. Don't forget their were ninja there that make these walls all the time so I would doubt they add their chakra to the walls and help make them stronger.
