I am specifically looking at the hair styles here... Shikamaru's father's hair style has a very close resemblance to the ANBU Root person. Knowing that ANBU Root is made up of Konoha Shinobi... I wouldn't be surprised if there are some plot twists waiting here....

And remember that Sai gave Orochimaru a copy of all the Leaf's shinobi... who better to complie that record, that a loyal Konoha ANBU ninja, that is also an ANBU Root.

An interesting theory, but I don't think its true. I think that all of Root probably is with Danzo right now, so if he was a part of it, he wouldn't be out there at the moment.

Though, it is also possible simply because he wants to protect the village. While Root's ways may be different and controversial, overall it could be possible that they want to protect the village, but in their own way.

About his father... We saw a really different version of him after Asuma's death, when talking to Shikamaru. Completely different from the cool-guy that would talk with Shikamaru about women, like him mom... remember those times?
Also, he seems to be very familiar with these types of situations, when good friends die around you. Tsunade, Kakashi, Gai... they are all more expressive about their emotions compared to Shikamaru's father, towards death.

I never thought about Iruka's hair being like that, good reference, I didn't think it was that long though... idk..
