Shikamaru is beyond a genius ,
a master at testing and simulating at least hundreds of possible scenarios in seconds.
this link is the very start of his greatness and ( correction* its over 200)
the only one to become a chunin in his generation.
all in all he still human even thru his careless act he's one of most softest ninjas in Narutos generation.
this link is the moment in life where he realized no amount of thinking can over come an obstacle like this.
maybe the first besides iruka to have acknowledged Naruto of being a good shinobi if not the greatest shinobi alive.

I forgot to add the shikamaru was also praised by temari of being a great hokage during the war.
if any character shikamaru is the one who should've had more screen time. at least his son is getting some recognition in bourto.
