Choji got one earlier in the war. He went from a slobbering whiny fat guy who nearly got his team killed, to a giant fat butterfly that cleaned up the battlefield. Shika and Ino stood to the side while Choji had the spotlight. Now the attention is on them. It is cliche, but I think Kishi wanted to power them up like Choji and figured the best way to explain it was by killing their fathers.
I have no clue how they will be powered up. Stronger and larger shadows for Shika? Proving himself smarter than his father and even adding to his plan? Ino being able to maintain the mind switch for a longer period? But it does seem like we are setup up for something epic.
It does seem like they, and specifically Shikamaru, will end up a huge part in taking down the most powerful force in the history of the manga. Which will make them immortals as much as legends. And they will probably show something new while doing it.
