Im trying to figure out was it necessary for the uchiha to take their family members eyes. Couldn't sasuke and itachi just exchange eyes and have the same effects as taking them away without the lost of a life, we've seen izuna give his eyes to madara even though he was dying and madara was losing his light but izuna gave them to him and died after. So my question is was it witnessing the death of their brothers or receiving the eye itself that gave them the power up or is a combination of both necessary for the full potential of the sharingan to awake

I don't think Itachi and Sasuke were up for doing swapsies at that point, and besides, Sasuke only had 3T then.

You need to transplant your brothers mangekyo to gain Eternal Mangekyo.

Itachi didn't want Sasukes eye's, and he wouldn't have gotten EMS because Sauce didn't possess MS yet.

Seeing something traumatic evolves 3T to MS, that's why Itachi told Sasuke too kill his Best friend to get MS. When Itachi saw Shisui die he got MS. We don't know how Madz & Izuna got MS but we know they lived in an awful period of time and probably saw horrible things.

This page implies its a combination of the eyes that creates the EMS. Basically 4 eyes are required to create 1 pair of EMS.

Now do the eyes actually combine? Unlikely. If they don't combine one would think simply exchanging is enough. Yet the manga tells us that 4 are required, so that's that.

The combination of 4 eyes becoming 2 also explains the combined MS patterns.

I understand that he didn't have EMS at the time but he could've easily found a way around this for example slaughter team taka we saw how attached sasuke was during the eight tails fight and there was a comparison to team seven im sure helplessly watching his team get manhandled by itachi and kisame would do the trick later down the line genjutsu him the truth behind the actions

Exactly, that's why I stated the manga is implying that the eyes actually combine. If they were to combine, then technically all 4 are functional. Again, this would explain the combined MS patterns.

Obviously we saw Sasuke underwent a physical transplant so in reality the manga contradicts itself a bit, but the facts given in chapter 386 imply the 4 eyes are indeed needed.
