Instead of following everyone else, and simply posting a question within a thread thats been asked a thousand times, i figured i'm going to explain the matchup presented and answer it within the thread, so you don't have to ask later.

Now, people are going to be split on this one i'm sure. On one side we'll have the Sasuke/ Itachi fanboys in favor of the Sharingan and Mangekyo Sharingan, and on the other will be frequent readers of Narutopedia citing the Rinnegan as being the most powerful Dojutsu of the Great Three Eye techniques. Niether are right, and neither are wrong, because this contest is one of variables and the individual user of the jutsu.

(The first part of this article will be written in the sense that the reader has little to no knowledge about either topic being presented.)

Lets start with the Sharingan, a multi stage Dojutsu. It is awakened, often at an early age, by the user experiencing a near death situation. From there, it will gain aspects of appearance as it becomes more powerful, eventually turning into an advanced form called the Mangekyo Sharingan. This form will grant the user the ability to perform extremely powerful ocular ninjutsu and genjutsu, at the risk of the user going blind from the strain. However, if the overused Sharingan is replaced with anothers eyes, it will result in the user acquiring the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, which will not deteriorate and retain the power of the users original Mangekyo and then some. This is considered the absolute pinnacle of what a Sharingan can become.

Sasuke's Mangekyo Sharingan.

Now the Rinnegan, a slightly less complicated yet more mysterious ocular Dojutsu. The Rinnegan is said to be the most sublime and prized of all the Three Great Eye Techniques, as it was the dojutsu oringinally possessed by the Sage of Six Paths, the first of all ninja and the deity of the Naruto Universe. In addition to the increased visual prowess granted by all the Great Eye Techniques, the Rinnegan's main strong point is simple: It allows the user the ability to master all six nature transformations in Ninjutsu, essentially meaning that a user has the potential to use any and all Ninjutsu with a nature transformation (IE all "complete" techniques").

The Rinnegan, as possessed by Nagato.

At first glance, this would leave a normal shinobi, often only capable of mastering one nature transformation of his own affinity, at a disadvantage even with the Sharingan, but lets not jump in headfirst without thinking.

The variables i mentioned above need to be considered before a decision can be made. While the Sharingan can't quite compete in terms of potential, that's really the only exclusive thing granted to a Rinnegan user: increased potential. Contrary to popular belief, the RInnegan does NOT automatically make you a master of all six elemental transformations, as this takes an incredible amount of work to obtain. Let's say you were only interested in one element, like water. You would only master water jutsu, and the other five transformations would be useless if you suddenly decided to try and use them in a fight on a whim. In fact, it may even be deadly to release the elemental chakra without any prior practice in its use.

The Sharingan gives its users a bit of leeway as far as ability goes. What i mean by that is the Sharingan will sometimes simply grant its users abilities without the user practicing a particular technique. A prime example of this would be a Sharingan users ability to copy precise movements, an ability not cited to be possessed by the Rinnegan.

In the Rinnegan's case, i believe that any user willing to go through the pain of actually mastering all six transformations would be absolutely unstoppable, even by the Mangekyo Sharingan. However, without the will to accomplish this, the Rinnegan is truly nothing more than a gateway to power and not power itself.

In my honest opinion, the Mangekyo Sharingan would come out on top in a battle with a Rinnegan user, for the mere fact that the Sharingan has more potential within itself and does not rely on the user to be the key to the techniques granted by it..

feel free to post your opinions below, and have a nice day :)
