Kishimoto didnt put much emphasis on this. Rinnegan -> Unknown Dojutsu -> Byakugan -> Sharingan.

Doesnt make sense seeing how Madara obtained Rinnegan via Senju DNA by passing two factors here.

Maybe Orochimaru will reveal it

This was stated once in the anime, and it was only "implied" by kakashi. The information surrounding the SO6P pretty much negates this.

Pretty much this post. The reason kakashi stated this was most likely because he doesn't know everything and that he most likely gets what he knows about the secrets of the sharingan from other sources that also don't know the truth. It would be awesome if Kishi elaborated on the origins of the bayakugan more thoroughly. That way this confusion wouldn't occur.
