Second picture he found out two pirates he respected very much have been killed.

Because your second pic is stretched wider than your first. Also his eyes in the second pic aren't as happy as the first pic, it's his expression that makes it seem different.

Although I feel the art definitely changes as the show progresses. In Amazon Lily Luffy's hat looked more round at the top then it did at Sabaody archipelago.
