Orochimaru found the cave first and learned senjutsu, but his current vessel wasn't able to handle the techniques at the time.
Kabuto used Juugo's cells to make it so he could absorb Natural energy passively and then trained in Ryuuchidou.

Izanami is a loose end that Kishi has purposefully left open. We will see Kabuto again

You have problems with comprehension, don't you? Orochimaru found the cave, he could not obtain any form of SM as he didn't have the correct body to obtain it. Orochimaru released Sage Transformation and took back his chakra. He didn't "steal" Sage Mode back from Kabuto as he isn't compatible with it. Juugo's Sage Transformation is Sage Mode, he is the origin of all of those abilities, not Orochimaru, manga states this bluntly. No one's saying Kabuto reached the Cave first, he may not have even gone there.

IMO I think Kabuto might still be seeking truth and even though he may be trying to save Sasuke, the way he does it will probably produce something unseen currently in NV and conclude his and Orochimaru's research

Wrong, thanks to all the DNA additions Kabuto would look completely different from when she knew him. So it still could b Kabuto

I'm not sure how I missed this, but was Kishimoto hinting at the Sasuke obtaining the Elder Son's Doujutsu (or another Senjutsu-Mangekyou power-up) the whole time?

Kishimoto shows Juugo giving Senjutsu chakra to Sasuke. His eyes are partially obfuscated by Kishimoto, but it's clear by the black "whites" of his eyes that he has Senjutsu chakra in him. He's also not loosing control....

That his Iris isn't shown is what's most interesting...

I think that if it happens, it will likely happen immediately (or almost immediately).

On another note, I actually hadn't noticed that Kabuto's sclera (eye "white") turned black only after he was in SM. That seems to be a characteristic of Sage powers originating from Ryuchidou.

Thanks for pointing that out, hadn't noticed, but I believe so, the same happens to Juugo, and Sasuke while using that power. [

Orochimaru took back his chakra, which took away the snake, scales, fangs and claws.
