Kusanagi* Sword: Chidori** Katana*** (草薙の剣・千鳥刀, Kusanagi no Tsurugi: Chidorigatana)
Ninjutsu, B-rank, Supplementary, Short range (0-5m)
User: Uchiha Sasuke
The pallid sharp blade that pierces through everything sings the song of thunder!!
Among those techniques that use a "chakra flow" to raise cutting ability or make use of the "Chidori," this technique in particular is called "Chidori Katana," because it flows Lightning-natured chakra through a katana. The radiating and chirping blade can easily cut up even steel. Furthermore, the body of the person cut by the sword goes numb, taking away their freedom of movement!!
[picture of Yamato being stabbed in the shoulder by Sasuke's Kusanagi Sword]
←The "Chidori" flows through the blade, into the enemy's body. The muscles hit by the electrical current go stiff, making it impossible to move!!
*The Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi (草薙剣) is sword from real-life mythology. It's as important to Japan's history as Excalibur is to Britain's. After defeating the great snake Yamata-no-Orochi (八岐大蛇) by getting him drunk on sake, the god Susanoo-no-Mikoto (須佐能乎命) discovered the Kusanagi in one of its tails, after breaking his own sword, the Totsuka-no-Tsurugi (十拳剣), on it. He called the sword Ama-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi (天叢雲剣, "Sword of the Gathering Clouds of Heaven") and would later give it to the sun goddess Amaterasu-Oomikami (天照大神) as an apology.
Amaterasu later gave it to her grandson Ninigi-no-Mikoto (瓊瓊杵尊) when she send him to pacify Japan. Through him, it eventually came into the hands of his great-grandson Jimmu Tennou (神武天皇, Emperor Jimmu), the first emperor of Japan. It is still considered one of the Imperial regalia of Japan, together with the mirror Yata-no-Kagami (八咫鏡) and jewel Yasakani-no-Magatami (八尺瓊勾玉).
Generations after Jimmu Tennou, the great warrior prince Yamato-Takeru-no-Mikoto (日本武尊) used the sword to save his life by cutting down grass that had been set on fire by a treacherous warlord. This is how it got its most famous name Kusanagi, meaning "Grass Cutter".
**Chidori (千鳥) means "a thousand birds". It's from a story about a sixteenth-century military commander named Tachibana Dousetsu, who owned a sword named the Chidori. One day, he was struck by lightning while sitting under a tree. Acting quickly, he drew his sword and cut the Thunder God riding the lightning. This saved his life and after this incident, he changed the name of his sword from Chidori to Raikiri (雷切, "Lightning Cutter").
***A Katana is a type of Japanese sword. It has a slender, curved blade with a single edge and a grip long enough for two hands. It's renowned for its extraordinary sharpness.
The blade of the katana is longer then about 60cm. Similar swords with shorter blades are called wakizashi (脇差).
My theory is that somewhere in the translations because of the technique Sasuke uses to enhance his blade with raiton it is being called a Kusanagi blade because of it's cutting ability and the difficulty in blocking it with any other than raiton-ized weapon. But it is not the legendary sword of Kusanagi which is a Japanese legend and treasure.
Before I submit my overwhelming visual, manga backed proof I should also state that some have suggested that there is more than one Kusanagi blade.
I reject that flat out. There can only be one or it is not legendary. To accept that is to then also accept that there are two legendary Yata Mirrors, or more than one Sword of Totsuka.
While it is difficult to explain why Sasuke would refer to his blade as a Kusanagi sword it is not impossible.
1) Being taught by Orochimaru it's possible he was also trained in sword play, observed that Oro used the Kusanagi and also referred to his as Kusanagi.
2) Perhaps Sasuke studied the abilities of Oro's true Kusanagi and mimicked them by enhancing his blade with chidori to make it cut better and increase the chance that it cannot be blocked. Look at what Yamato states here.
3) straight out mistranslation or error on someone's part to use the name Kusanagi as if it's a quality of a blade and not a unique object in and of itself.
Why his blade is not the real Kusanagi:
If you follow the premise that there is only one legendary blade, unless the blade is able to transform it's shape then the blade Sasuke uses and the blade Oro uses are not the same.
Oro has been shown many times to draw this blade from his mouth.
The blade is so special to him that he hides it inside himself versus openly
displaying it. Oro has drawn this sword in three of his most important battles. Versus Hiruzen, versus kyuubi mode Naruto and versus Itachi when
he broke free from Sasuke. If this sword was not extraodinary why would he
rely on it during these critical battles?
Here is a page from chapter 389 Sasuke's battle with Itachi
During the most critical battle of his life Sasuke doesn't even think about pulling this sword out to face Itachi (Itachi would probably break it, lolz).
At this point in their battle Sasuke had already used kunai, his shadow shuriken and even his curse mark. What? Is he saving his legendary sword for last? No, the sword against Itachi would be worthless to Sasuke because it's just an ordinary blade.
Here after Orochimaru comes out towards the end of that battle, what does he do? He draws his sword.
He draws it against Itachi with full Susanoo! He must think the blade can do something against that level of power.
More points:
1) Sasuke versus Bee
Bee blocks his attack. Everyone is shocked, not because the Kusanagi sword is blocked but because Bee matches the raiton. It's the raiton that makes Sasuke's sword special not that it's legendary
2) Wouldn't Bee as a legendary swordsmen and someone with a great enough appreciation of great swords recognize Sasuke's sword as something special if it was?
3) No one who has faced the blade thus far in battle has acknowledged it as the Kusanagi sword
4) The blade has not shown the abilities that Oro's blade has shown, i.e extending it's length like in Oro vs. Naruto or being controlled remotely like in Oro vs. Sarutobi.
5) In fact the blade has never shown any special ability other than Sasuke flowing raiton through it
6) Here Danzo takes the sword from a paralyzed Sasuke and mentions nothing about it being special. Tobi who commented about everything Sasuke did during this battle never mentions anything about the sword either.
7) According to Naruto Wiki (i know, but hey ) not only is the sword not
as special as Oro's but it is supposedly not even picked up by Sasuke after his battle with Danzo.
In closing this theory which I'm sure some will disagree with, I state this. You have the visual proof and manga proof I have stated here and you have the Chapter 308 page where Sasuke himself states his blade is Kusanagi. My opinion is that because the blade is made pseudo unblockable by raiton it is called Kusanagi.
Perhaps there is a translation issue or maybe Kishi is just trolling us but I can't accept that the sword Oro and Sasuke have are the same sword and we've seen that Oro's sword has special abilities
so it's up to you to decide what you believe.
