Well he's going to be popular by default from being an actual main character. I say "actual" because one could can have the title but that means nothing without the panel-time, development and focus.

He was really, really hated. I still see quite a lot of haters. It's not like Japan where everyone loves him.

If you are referring to Kabuto; then yes. Few can appreciate his character for the brilliance that he is and do not delve on him. I certainly hope you're not talking about Orochimaru. As he may not have a large fanbase, most people like him to an extent and acknowledge he's at the very least a fun character

We were fans even after he went berzerk after Obito told him the truth,we ain't going anywhere. My personal observation of threads and comment ih past few months. But Madara is following I must say.
