The eyes are fused to make the EMS. If you jot back and remember how this monster appeared when Sasuke was fighting Itachi, it had sockets for 2 set of eyes and there were only 1 set which was Itachis.

No clue if we're reading the same manga but the whole basis of this story is Uchiha vs Senju. The better question would be, during a waring states time why wouldn't people want each other to have more power? I'm not sure if you're objectively thinking about the story or if you're just attempting to rationalize 1 line of text into your opinion. Regardless, "these are your eyes" can be interpreted so many different ways, and mind you could just be something in translation that loses an object reference.

How the hell do you fuse 2 eyes together? Show me that. Furthermore, how would, a blind, Madara knowingly 'fuse' the pair of eyes? Especially if there was no precedent of it happening before him. Just grab his brothers eyes and blindly smash the pair of eyes together in the sockets & hope for the best? Or perhaps he pulled out a scalpel, seperated the corneas & lenses and merged them together that way? Please, it's more logical that he would take his brother's eyes, switch them out in their entirety & connect the tendons & nerves with basic medical ninjutsu.

As for the argument of the EMS having a mixed pattern? Take Itachi's eyes, put them in Sasuke and as his blood, DNA, chakra etc. mix or 'fuse' with Itachi's eyes, they become something unique. A mixture of the two.

Why was Kakashi able to use his eye right away and Sasuke had to wait it out with the bandages on? Well first of all, Kakashi's eye doesn't work all that well now does it? He can't switch it on/off. Sasuke's work a little better, I think you'd all agree. Who really knows though, it's hard to compare the two since Kakashi isn't an Uchiha.

All i'm sayin is show me, show me how they physically fuse two eyes into one and I'll believe it. Otherwise there is room for interpretation. Semantics...

If you have an eye transplant your eyes don't change colour back to what you previously had. So why if you swapped eyes would the patterns just casually merge? the eye pattern is on the eye.

In exchange for EMS four eyes are required, an Uchihia's original two plus the new set of eyes combined. This is done by medical jutsu, so you can assume that there is a required process for EMS to be unlocked.

Of the whole clan that would be keen to swapping eyes, I know of four who have obtained the MS. In each instance one of the pair died (or so we are led to believe) so apparetnly it's not as easy as finding two people who both meet the requirements and are willing. So there's that...

The whole process has never been clearly stated, but
if it is not a fusion, why Madara and Izuna do not have exchanged their Eyes in order to get both EMS?
There has been no real explanation for this till now.

As for why Izuna and Madara didn't swap eyes, it's because they didn't know about EMS, Izuna gave him his eyes so he could see again since he was the clan leader.

And even if they switched eyes there is no guarantee they would gain EMS.

Thus EMS is a Transplant, the manga states it, Sasuke states he has Itachi's eyes, not once did they say fusion.

Sasuke has his Eyes...the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan is a combination of two Mangekyo thats why you see both the designs oh his MS and Itachi's MS in his eyes...After the implant Sasuke had to wear bandages over his eyes until the fusion was complete and it took days... as you know people who replace their eye with a Sharingan can use it right away like how Rin transplanted Obito's Sharingan eye to Kakashi and he used it on spot. and when Obito took Nagato's Rinnegan it was the same case as Kakashi.
