This is just a beta to the thread I am possibly going to make but what I want to say about Sasuke's answer is that it can go in two interpretations equally between protecting the leaf or taking revenge on the leaf.
The parallels between Hashirama and Madara and Naruto and Sasuke continue, and the way things ended with Hashirama and Madara can very well happen the same way as Naruto and Sasuke.
Madara and Sasuke's situations are very much the same, they both really care(d) for the Uchiha and both in the end really had and have nothing besides Hashirama's friendship for Madara, and Naruto's friendship towards Sasuke. That being said Sasuke can still become a new Madara and everything can literally repeat itself.
During the flashbacks, during everything Hashirama has said, there have been subliminal things that were shown that will lead to pick what Sasuke's answer will be. Although Madara and Sasuke's story and situation are practically the same, I think what separates the situations is what the two's brothers ultimately wanted.
If Izuna wanted to join forces with the Senju, then Madara would have done it easily. Which is what led Madara down his path, Sasuke on the other hand his brother wanted him to go back to the leaf and inherit his will.
I think that was the main point Kishimoto was trying to get there, he wanted to show us that Izuna did not want Madara to join the leaf, but conversely Itachi wanted Sasuke to join them. And that is what will ultimately pick Sasuke's answer. He will understand Madara became the way he did because he wanted to follow his brother's wishes.
Conclusively: Sasuke will join the leaf mainly because of Itachi's will. Which is what everyone in the Narutoverse who knows the truth about Itachi has said in the first place is what Sasuke should've done.
