That doesn't mean nothing, he awaken as Madara said. On that other hand, Madara mixed Indra and Ashura's chakra, bringing about the Sage of Six Path's chakra. Therefore, it wasn't Madara's chakra, so he didn't awaken Rinnegan on his own. If that makes sense.
