He might have been assigned the mission of following Orochimaru and relaying information back to the Village after he was initially approached during the Chunin Exams. Sai's real mission could have been to inform Sasuke of a change in the mission. Sasuke was then ordered to kill Orochimaru and approach the Akatsuki to get close to the leader. He really only killed Deidara because he was attacked first, and the whole thing with killing Itachi could have been planned from the beginning.

i hope this is true. sasuke was one of my most favorite pre-MS. post MS, he is a whiny prick murderous machine, who is too crazy to see what his brother desired for him to see. like ive said before, i hope itachi changes his mind and he saves naruto from being killed by tobi and they fight together.

Not a chance. The Hokage has to know about this and Tsunade would not allow the following things
1) Naruto to risk his life chasing after him
2) Anyone to treat Sasuke as a rogue ninja
3) Authorize the Konoha 11 to kill Sasuke
