We don't know what means he used to go to kaguya's dimension and its not fair to assume he can do it on the heat of battle, given the evidence, it takes him a lot of energy and probably he needs a lot of prep to do it.

You're assuming he needs Susano'o, and him using Susano'o could be inorder to bring the others along, just as he used Susano'o to shield his teamates from the Infinite Tsukuyomi.
