Do I think Sasuke is right? Of course. Anyone who's been hurt as badly as he has been has a right to be angry, to be filled with hatred, and to want revenge on the people who hurt him so badly and screwed up his life. That's understandable; it's human nature. But there are two things that aren't right when it comes to his revenge.
First off, he wants to take out everyone. Not just the Elders. They are the ones who gave Itachi the order to wipe out the Uchiha Clan. They are the ones who let Uchiha Itachi be labelled as a traitor, criminal, and murderer. Sasuke hating the entire village and wanting to destroy everyone is not justified, in any light. Because the rest of the village has no clue about Itachi's truth, omit Naruto, Kakashi, and Yamato. They shouldn't be hated for living in a peace brought by Itachi when they have no clue he actually sacrificed himself for their peace. And, deep inside, I think Sasuke knows he doesn't have the right to blame them, but the fact is he still hates them because they don't know.
Next there's the fact that Sasuke doesn't know the entire story behind the higher up's wanting the Uchiha gone. Sasuke knows what Tobi told him, which we all know was not the full truth. The village, in reality, had a good reason for wanting to finish off the Uchiha Clan. They knew only an Uchiha could be behind the Kyuubi's attack on the Leaf and decided to target the entire clan because they thought the Uchiha were planning something which, after they were pushed into their own little corner of the village, they did start to plan an uproar. The only thing, when it comes to the way the Leaf went about things, in my opinion, was using Itachi. You don't make a teenage boy slaughter his clan. In that sense, the Leaf's actions are not justified anymore than Sasuke's revenge.
My point is: though Sasuke's wanting to take out the Elders is justified, in a sense, he still shouldn't do it. Maybe they do deserve it, but sometimes we don't think about what that would mean. Sasuke has been, for the last eight or so years of his life, driven by revenge and hatred. He hated Itachi before he knew the truth. Now he hates the Leaf for what they made his brother do. Killing the Elders wouldn't actually make him feel better, I don't think. He'd just turn his hatred elsewhere and the cycle of vengence he's trapped in would truly never end. He can't just kill the Elders and live as a rogue; Sasuke needs a drive. A point in life.
When it comes to Sasuke, I don't know what should happen, honestly. I think he should fight against his own hatred and not act on it, but if he returns to the Leaf he'll be charged as a criminal and even if he does get to live his life will be, like the OP said, pretty pointless. Sasuke's always had a drive. Always. As a child he wanted to be like/surpass his brother. Then he began to live in order to kill said brother. And now he wants the Hidden Leaf gone. He's not the sort of man who can just laze around; he needs a purpose in life. I don't know what dream he would have in the Leaf, should he let go of all the hatred he's been clinging to up until now.
Sometimes I almost wonder if the best thing for Sasuke is a redeeming, noble death. But I dunno.
