When has Sasuke ever done anything out of selfishness?

His entire life has been about avenging the slaughter of his Mother, his Father, and his clan. Is that selfish? To put his own life at horrible risk for people who aren't even alive anymore, just so the pain inside his chest has meaning? To make sure, that his Brother's horrendous suffering doesn't come to naught.

To loose himself in hatred, abandon every decent thing in his life, for a cause that was lost long ago.

An eye for an eye. Has anyone ever gained anything from that? They have only lost.

On the contrary, I think he is one of the most selfish characters in the series. His whole life goals are indeed avenging his family, but it is for his own personal satisfaction, as is all vengeance. He is in fact so dead set on it he abandons endangers his comrades for his personal lust for vengeance and power. That is pure selfishness. I love Sasuke as a character, and feel for what he's been through. However, he is the farthest thing from selfless.

Sasuke is a very complex and confused character. Remember, he was already bent on vengeance... but after seeing Itachi, and feeling his "undying" love towards Konoha... Sasuke decided to put a hold on his vengeance in order to get BOTH sides of the story. This is what's happening right now, he's seeing the "one-who-knows-everything"!
I agree with OP in the statements about "from an early age" Sasuke wanting to get vengeance etc. and "abandoning all things decent" in his life to avenge his family and brother.

Sasuke definitely has been "selfless" for a majority of his life. (1 example: sacrificing himself for Naruto during Haku fight) But he's been getting his hands more and more dirty. I think Sasuke's twisted upbringing has made him a person that is susceptible to becoming evil. He still has a chance for redemption though imho.

I don't think it's necessarily "both sides of the story" that he's seeking, but a general understanding on the order of the world. If he's merely a puppet of fate, or if he's actually acting of his own accord IMO

Yeah, well said. When I said "both sides of story" I meant something like, both "points of view" or perspectives. When he understands multiple perspectives, he can gain knowledge, understanding, and finally have some closure on the past, present and future of Shinobi, villages, and clans!

Getting a bit philosophical there, with the morality aspects. But I digress. Avenging for the sake of family and clan could of been seen as retribution, or noble. But Sasuke no longer sees Justice. Konoha's destruction will only serve to make himself feel better (and cheers from Konoha's enemies). So, I strongly disagree with you, Sasuke is not 'selfless.' Think about it from this point of view. A selfless person would not seek power for simply revenge, or try to kill their own best friend (which he DIDN'T WANT to die), or have so little compassion for others' emotional vulnerabilities. Still not convinced?

Definition of "selfless" here are the following

Getting the curse mark, who did that benefit? Leaving the village, who's desire was met? Gaining power for revenge, where was the greater good in that? Finally, when has Sasuke ever shown real humility or compassion to others? Just compare the definition to Sasuke's actions, do they match?

I'm not a Sasuke hater. But perhaps its a good time to rethink on the ideas of revenge, retribution, noble, and justice.

Piercing through Karin's chest to hit Danzo sounds pretty selfish to me.

His whole attitude towards Taka can be deemed selfish.

I actually agree with both of you, not just because Sasuke put his friends first in part one, but also because he did everything Itachi wanted him to do and he embraced hate and isolation just like Itachi taught him. Then he finally gets a chance to talk to Itachi, but Sasuke is still not importaint enough to Itachi to talk to, with or without an "I will always love you" goodbye of troll mastery.

Hey, my brother took my family away from me so I am going to take everything he has dear away from him, the village took my brother away from me so I am going to take everything the village holds dear.... Its selfish because at no point does he consider other peoples feelings or opinions, isnt that the definition of selfish? He sacrifices hebi, and everyone that is loyal to him in an instant if it means more power or a chance to avenge something. He is selfish because he puts his needs over everyone elses in the manga, he is like a little kid and everyone knows it. Itachi knows it but knows he cant convince him to stop, Danzo remarks to it and he ignores it telling him not to mention itachi's name, Naruto knows it, everyone in the leaf knows it, Tobito knows it and used it to manipulate him, the guy is like an arrow with no direction laying out fury and rage on anything that crosses his path. There is no rythm or reason to his vengance moving on to the next target once he has enough reason to be hate them, and in the ninja world there is more than enough hate to go around.

If this thread was called "Sasuke's Revenge is justified" then I would be more convinced. But "selflessness" is about performing acts of good will and respecting the wishes of others instead of doing things for personal gain. And there are many examples where Sasuke doesn't fit into that category.

1. He killed oro after oro trained him
2. He is the leader of Hebi/Taka and is constantly leading themfikghts which they really havee no chance
3. Danzo tells him why his brother fled and he still wants to take revenge
4. He stabs kirinn in the ches
5. He abandons suigetsu and juugo at the kage summit.that he brings them to
6. He is trying to destroy the whole village although he had already killed the person that ordered the hit on kohona
7. How do these actions help anyone else? This is fuel times the village is king and if you go against the king you die, thats the law that they all agree to from the conception of the village.

He is the soul beneficiary of anything that comes out of his actions, he is not helping anyone but his own ego.
