After Naruto chapter 590 came out I realized something. Sasuke was Madara's plan B if Nagato or Tobi failed. Here's some reasons why I have this theory...
1: Tobi seems to have a strange interest/protective nature in Sasuke, and seems intent on helping him release his inner power.
2: I believe Danzo knew something that the Third Hokage didn't know about the Uchia Clan massacre. That's why it was Danzo who told Itachi if he wanted Sasuke to be saved, he would have to decieve him altogether so he would never suspect the Hidden Leaf was behind it. Madara was the mastermind behind the entire thing. And incase Nagato failed he wanted a body to inherit, basically the youngest Uchiha alive at the time, Sasuke. Tobi, is the means of getting Sasuke's body.
3: Orochimaru was also in on it, since he bit Sasuke and took over his body in order to give him strength, and a strong will to become strong in order to get revenge on Itachi.
4: Itachi knew this was Madara's plan, but I believe he always had faith that Sasuke would never turn evil, or give in to these people. That's why he pushed Sasuke to his limit when they fought, so that he could extract Orochimaru out of him and then plant Amaterasu within his eye to get rid of Tobi. (or at least attempt to) He also planted that crow inside of Naruto because he knew of the Edo Tensei plan a long time ago and he knew he was the only one who could stop it. Because he realized that Naruto was the only person who could stop Sasuke from taking the wrong path of no return, so he stopped trying to protect Sasuke and left it all up to Naruto.
5: I believe Madara knew something about the Biiju, and knew he could gain ultimate power by collecting all 9 of them through the Rinnegan. But in his old age he knew his time was up and so he and Orochimaru created Tobi as a way of having a back up plan. He basically wanted Tobi (a freak hybrid of Madara and Hashirama's cells) to be the means of accomplishing all of this. But Tobi and Orochimaru both became hungry for power while Madara slept in his grave awaiting Nagato's resurrection jutsu.
I could go on and on about it, but basically that's my theory. Why Orochimaru and Tobi abandoned the original plan is beyond me.
