Sasuke said Itachi's mistake was keeping bonds and his little brother in the dark. Itachi could have let go of all bonds by killing Sasuke and telling everyone the truth about the Uchiha clan. His family would be viewed as traitors within his village, but he himself would be well-received in Konoha and possibly Hokage had he not cared for them and done that. Sasuke is forgetting the past, he admitted he won't care for them after this fight once he finished off Naruto. He wishes to succeed in letting go of all bonds.
Itachi killed only when he had to (when his clan was set up to be eliminated by Konoha if he didn't, and when he had to keep up his cover in Akatsuki). Sasuke wishes to kill w/o giving the people a chance. He doesn't have to, he's doing it as a precaution since he doesn't know what the future will bring. Itachi was different in the way that he wouldn't kill another shinobi unless they were a direct threat at that moment. He even gave Kabuto a chance.
Sasuke wishes for a totalitarian set up. He resembles Danzo. His older sibling wasn't the type that would carry something like that out.
The only similarity is bearing the hatred, however, Sasuke is going to purposely provoke people so that they hate him. Not out of necessity. People will rebel against him and he'll execute them without a second thought. Ironically, he's like the person he hated the most- Danzo. And once he dies years later, no one will want to take up the post of Hokage and his plan will fail.
He basically took his brother's words and twisted them around to his liking. He's not following the same path as him, nearly the opposite in fact.
