A parental figure will always love you, it doesn't mean he/she condones your actions.

So then wouldn't it just be like Itachi's parents who simply disagreed with him? I don't recall any of them thinking that he was an imbecile for choosing Konoha's side.

Really...you conveniently forgot that he wants to kill all the kages...what a nice guy...he made killing the leaders of every single village his new goal...Naruto changed a lot of people in the series...the kages, the bijus, Obito etc...he wants to kill all of them for the crimes they committed before changing...but only after they've changed...Kishi should have killed him off at the beginning of the series...its not like he is an important character. The story would still have been great with just the Akatsuki and Orochimaru as enemies.

Allow me to elucidate on my point: A loving parent will say to an unruly child that no matter what he is or what he does he still loves him, this act of affection is to induce a psychologically suggestive desire for the child to reciprocate the affection with a positive response (like not being unruly anymore) it doesn't really mean that the parent tolerates or encourages the unruliness of the child, only that through the display of positive suggestion the parent hopes it will encourage his/her child to do the right thing.
