I'm not saying he had the sharingan but if you look at the eye, it resembles a combination Rinningan and Sharingan, these are of my lesser theories that I don't post but take a look at the eye of the Juubi and see the corrilation between the color and the tome of both Sharingan and the Juubi's eye.

Gotta ask Kishi, why did the Sage have the Rinningan and the Juubi's eye looked like a combination of Sharingan and Rinningan?

So this whole thing with needing of both Senju and Uchiha dna for the rinnegan is totally conceptual without any concrete confirmation. Shoot! I thought for the longest time that was canon for naruto. So in reality nobody knows.
