Think about it. If Sasuke wanted to really kill Naruto, he would have used Rinnegan genjutsu on Hagoromo and make him use Six Paths Chibaku Tensei. Even if he didn't, he can use Rinnegan genjutsu on Naruto and rip Kurama out with Rinnegan chains. Naruto isn't very powerful. He just uses Kurama's power. If Sasuke removes Kurama, Naruto is dead.

But isn't that just a regular sharingan genjutsu enhanced by the rinnegan and couldn't naruto have Kurama snap him out of it or just simply avoid which he could do with his sage mode.

It isn't a Sharingan Genjutsu because Sharingan Genjutsu requires eye contact and is Single Target. Also Kurama can not break this Genjutsu, neither can Naruto.

Before meeting the Edo Hokage with Orochimaru, Sasuke wanted to kill Naruto and destroy the village because of what they put Lord Itachi through. After meeting the Hokage he made a New plan, which he explained right before Naruto started VOTE 2. That's why Sasuke helped Naruto during the war. Sasuke didn't want to kill Naruto until after VOTE 2 started.
