what? What on earth does Sasuke being drained out when he used Kirin when fighting Itachi (Yes, I knew this) have to do with Sasuke using Kirin where there is no natural lightning in sight though Kirin is, by definition, composed of natural lightning. It's like firing an unloaded gun and expecting it to kill. There's two explanations for this. Sasuke didn't know Kirin was made of natural lighting. This is unlikely as he invented the technique. Or, Kishimoto had a vague idea of new attack for Sasuke and decided to foreshadow it. Many chapters later, he decided to add in the natural lightning part despite that not lining up with what happened here. Thus, this inconsistency is explained.

That same fodder that utterly mopped the floor with team seven and did it with hardly any difficulty at that?

Yamato at that time > Sasuke for sure

Yamato would have got spanked, he is a bad match up for Sasuke for a number of reasons.

1. His main form of combat consists of Mokuton, something of which is weak against both lightning and flame, that is really clear enough.

2. Yamato lacks the speed and reaction feats to keep up with Sasuke's Shunshin, his base speed also is much faster than that of Yamato's.

3. Sasuke can use genjutsu on Yamato, he is not immune to it, he is just like the majority of every other characters in Naruto. For the moments he is under genjutsu, he is open to an array of attacks.

4. Sasuke can basically prevent any Mokuton from coming near him and or if he is already restrained, he can use Chidori Nagashi, which would destroy the wood.

5. Sasuke's Kenjutsu and overall weapon usage (Shuriken, stringed Shuriken and so on) is top tier in the Narutoverse, only behind a select few. Kenjutsu can play a large role in defense, offense and so on. Yamato's weapon skills really pale in comparison.
