Sasuke coming to this battle is change...
Change for the good, or for worse we dont know yet...
I believe Sasuke meant what he said he will go to the battlefield to make sure the village will carry on. I say this as generally throughout the manga Kishi has built him up to be a quite straight to the point no nonsense character, and it would be out of character for him to lie like that.
However that is an opinion only.
What i believe is Sasuke will play a part in the war, however at the ends won't be able to shake his grief and anger, and will be TRUE to his word of battling Naruto prior to all else, [remember after he killed Danzo, and he swore he would start with Naruto after Naruto asked him to channel all his hate to him, and remember when he recovered from his eye transplant, he was heading to find Naruto and instead found Itachi]
The battle is still most definitely on, [again only opinion]
