Hiruzen's cool, but we'll never see his full potential anytime soon, considering that the only one Kabuto brought back at their prime as an edo was Madara (well, none of the edos are at 100% power, but you get what I mean. He just brought back everyone in the shape they were before they died, excluding Madara). We will never see prime Hiruzen and he is going to go back along with the other edo hokages at the end of this war. It also isn't helping his case that of all people, Karin was able to beat that Zetsu's buddha, while the best he could do was match up with it.

Karin did not beat the Statue, in fact she only destroyed a few arms and got stabbed by Zetsu. She survived only because of her healing powers. Hiruzen's case was different. He was on the defensive because his main concern was protecting the Alliance from the 5 Elemental attack.
