Some people forget that Naruto was mostly a failure because of his horrible chakra control, outside of the manga panels of him working on his shuriken and physical body. He did not really lack in areas that was not stated to be horrible in aside from mental strength.

I don't really see Boruto being an entire idiot like his father, because Naruto spent a good chunk of his time dealing with Konohgakure mistreating him, and playing pranks on the village to earn respect. While I'm assuming the other kids took class and school seriously.

The kid really has no reason to fail, especially if he wants recognition from his father. "Watch me crappy old man" - If my father was the Hokage, I would be nothing but the best at all times. I don't see Kishimoto setting up this relationship in which Boruto tries to branch away from his father and/or try to gain his respect (or his version of respect), and has the child suck at every thing shinobi.
