He didn't throw anything, he's clearly still holding it. And given the positioning of her body, I'd say she didn't move at all, he missed on purpose. They aren't out to kill Shin and his fellows, for now they want to capture them to find out what they want.

I don't think you are looking at the pictures clearly enough.

The first picture where Sasuke aims the sword, she is already a few inches away from the pillar, while Sasuke is a few feet away, especially with the sword clearing the distance.

Of course she touched the back of the pillar, she was right there. It's not like Sasuke used shunshin or footspeed, he clearly just lunged.
