Indeed the plot eventually focuses on Kirito x Asuna which is rather pathetic, and I would've rather seen it go somewhere along the lines of more intense plot. The second half is pretty pointless too.

However, the animation and art is above average and it's very good to look at, making the action scenes very spectacular. Kirito is also being portrayed as both a chick magnet and the most overpowered player in the game, which is also done pretty well.

All in all I'd say it is worth watching.

There are 2 arcs in SAO , first one goes well and it is fun but second one goes a bit downhill.
If you like video games and more particularly, MMORPGs then you will definitely love this show.

It depends on what kind of anime you enjoy. There's plenty of action and the animation is crisp, but the story is not necessarily it's strongest point. From what I hear, the anime leaves out quite a bit of detail so consider reading the manga if you like the series.

Check it out if you like the .hack series, or if you've got a weekend with nothing to do.

Try watching Log Horizon, or the .Hack// series both featuring people who go into the MMO world.
As for Sword Art Online, give it the 3 episode rule, if you like what you see continue watching, if not dont bother.

The first 14 episodes are great. After that, it turns to poop. Overall, I would say not to watch it. It's much overhyped. Instead, watch Yu Yu Hakusho or Hunter x Hunter 2011. Both are very well done and have great animation (YYH was done in the 90s, but the animation still isn't bad) and fight scenes.
