Preface

In this thread, I'll be doing an in depth analysis into the fighting techniques, traits, and feats, as well as introducing some exploits of my favorite character; Lord Jiraiya. His fight against Pain, including some of the feats shown by the Ni Dai Sennin (the Two Great Sage Toads of Myobokuzan, Shima and Fukasaku) even after his death showcased what Jiraiya is truly capable of at full power. With tremendous versatility, firepower, and the benefits of Myobokuzan's patented sage ninjutsu, Jiraiya is truly a force to be reckoned with. He is one of the very few characters who boasts impressive ability in most, if not all facets of the shinobi arts, whilst having powerful jutsus and summonings to match. Although he clearly does not beat Itachi and Kisame at the same time, and cannot defeat Pain by himself, make no mistake that his hype isn't completely hyperbolic. In fact, it's a testament to his renown as the legendary toad sage, the encompassing human symbol of Myobokuzan, and one of the best and most famous shinobi of all time.

It's funny that I should be starting this thread by speaking about one of Jiraiya's disadvantages, but it can't really be helped, though it isn't that big of a disadvantage in my opinion. Obviously, Jiraiya was unable to balance natural energy with his own chakra, making him incapable of entering sage mode by himself without turning himself into a frog. However, this deficiency is remedied by summoning Shima and Fukasaku onto his shoulders, and having them fuse their chakra to his. This process is called the Amphibian Technique. This way, Jiraiya can focus completely on fighting whilst the versatile sage toads absorb and control the flow of natural energy for him, eliminating the weakness of possibly exhausting natural energy. There is a special blood ritual that Jiraiya has to execute before summoning the Ni Dai Sennin.

This roughly translates to one minute or a minute and a half at the most considering what went on during the time he had his hands clasped together. Against most opponents, Jiraiya can enter Sage Mode if he deems it necessary. Of course, Sage Mode greatly enhances a shinobi's physical traits, ninjutsu, and capacity to knead chakra. This ends the introductory part of this thread, as I'll be highlighting Jiraiya's feats and techniques in both base and Sage Mode from now on.

], Jiraiya is a well known stamina beast, and boasts a high level of chakra control to match. While under the effects of Tsunade's drug, he was able to create a swamp large enough to

a very large snake summon, and afterwards implied that he could make it even larger [

]. He was able to summon Bunta later on in that fight [

], again with the effects of Tsunade's drug working against him. Against Pain and Konan, he used his Toad Silhouette Technique, a regular Katon: Endan, his Wild Lion's Mane technique twice, he summoned Ken, a boss toad, used a sensing barrier, summoned the toad sages, used large scale techniques like Chou Oodama Rasengan, Senpou Goemon, and Senpou Kebari Senbon, split his chakra once using a shadow clone, and yet

after trapping the three paths into the toad sages' genjutsu. Suffice it to say that this man can fight for a long time on a high level. In terms of durability, he showed no sings of injury or damage after being smashed though several steel pipes by a giant Ox summon after entering Sage Mode [

. In regards to his pain tolerance, he was able to continue fighting and withstand the great pain of having his arm blown off from the rest of his body while only showing a slight grimace [

].With six black rods impaled into his body outside of sage mode and on top of the previous injuries he sustained, he still managed to get up and used his finger carving seal to inscript a code onto Fukasaku's back despite the black rods heavily disrupting his chakra flow [

]. Sure, he was already sure to die by then with no chance of recovery, but it just goes to show that Jiraiya has a tremendous deal of durability, pain tolerance, and mental strength.

Taijutsu/CQC

Admittedly, Jiraiya doesn't really have any CQC feats in base, but he does have a 4.5/5 score in taijutsu, so he should be able to hold his own against shinobi who don't completely outclass him in skill, speed, reactions, and/or strength in base. In Sage Mode, however, his physical stats and skill are boosted enough for him to be able to take on a wider array of opponents in CQC and perhaps even beat a majority of those opponents or at the very least dissuade them from engaging in CQC with Jman. For one, he gains access to Kawazu Kumite, or Frog Kata [

When someone learns Senjutsu they gain command of a terrifying Taijutsu. Basically in Sage Mode by collecting natural energy they gain danger sensing powers (what Naruto uses to evade the Third Raikage's attack, Kabuto to sense Amaterasu, etc..). They can sense the enemies movement, match enemies rhythm/speed, to release a severe counter. Energy is released from one part of the body, the attacks reach is extended (i think, little bit confusing here). There is no chink (or weak spot) in offense and defense, it's a flawless Taijutsu.

→ Ninjutsu didn't work on Pain so Naruto used Frog Kata.

↓ The attacks range extends substantially. Pain is sent flying away.

One could argue that Jiraiya's inability to balance natual energy with his own chakra hinders his sage sensing and frog fu abilities, but nevertheless, he still gets a good boost to his speed, reactions, and strength as he was able to easily outclass Ningendo and Chikushodo in a 1v1 against each. Not to mention that Jiraiya has Shima and Fukasaku latched onto his shoulders who are both perfect sages, sensors, frog fu users, and have some very versatile techniques like Fighting Tongue Sash, Fighting Tongue Bind, and Senpou Kawazu Naki that I'll be outlining below in this thread that tremendously aid Jiraiya even further in CQC. Intelligence and Battle Tactics

Jiraiya comes off as a goofy pervert to all, but he is a very intelligent, observant, and shrewd goofy pervert, having gone through a lot in his life, having traveled to many parts of the shinobi world, having met many different people, and having battled many different shinobi including the likes of Hanzo of the Salamander during his prime. He apparently had sizable information network set up across the major nations of the shinobi world [

This village is practically closed off to the rest of the shinobi world, as most people thought, including Jiraiya himself, that Hanzo was still Amegakure's leader even though he was killed by Pain a long time ago.

Also remember that he was up against Nagato, someone who is on a pretty high level speaking from an intellectual stand point, and he admitted that Jiraiya got him [

III. Mt. Myoboku Summonings - Shima/Fukasaku's Techniques

Jiraiya's bread and butter are his toad summons. Endowed with physically intimidating presences, great strength and durability, great leaping ability, good mobility both on land and underwater, and great versatility, the toads of Myobokuzan are formiddable fighters and partners.

Boss Toads

The three main boss toads that we've seen thus far in the series are Bunta, Ken (my personal favourite), and Hiro. Kichi grew into a bijuu sized toad and showed good skill during the war but I don't consider him part of Jiraiya's arsenal as he grew after the man's death.

1. Size - Bunta was portrayed to be on par in size with the tailed beasts 100% Kurama notwithstanding [

Two Great Sage Toads (二大仙蝦蟇, Nidaisengama)

Undoubtedly two of the best summons in the entire series, Shima and Fukasaku are a big part of the reason why Jiraiya is such an all around beast in SM, as they provide him with an array of versatile skills, keen insight, and considerable fighting strength.

She has some of the most ridiculous feats for somebody her size, and boasts quite the chakra reserves. For one, she is able to summon all three boss toads of Myobokuzan, Naruto, Kichi, and Fukasaku all at once without breaking a sweat. So if one is to fight Jiraiya, the latter could have all three of his boss toads appear on a whim, and now you have to take on a horde of bijuu sized toads along with one of the best fighters in the manga backed up by the sage toads.

Absurd feat, correct? Well, that's not all. Look at where

before she leaped; she was on the very edge of the leaf village. She then jumped extremely high and made it to the epicenter of the village crater, practically in the middle of entire village and above Chou Shinra Tensei with just one leap [

Fighting Tongue Bind (Zessenbaku)

This little tongue demon that Shima keeps inside of her mouth is very useful. Not only can it track opponents via distinct and subtle scents, it's pretty fast as it travels to its enemy and wraps around them as noted by Animal Path [

], and can inflict serious damage with that corrosive mucous-like acid substance that the tongue exudes from its pores. The substance is also paralyzing as the databook says that it can detain movements, and the Chameleon summon pretty much was rendered unable to move after being hit and coated with acid. This is a very useful tool at close range and for tracking those who have hidden themselves from other senses. Also, Shima can use this tongue as a

as well. Note that she's a perfect sage and a sensor of her own as well [

], so her tracking prowess is already considerable and greater than Fukasaku's.

Sage Art: Wind Release Dust Cloud

This technique is an excellent smokescreen in general against all shinobi, especially dojutsu users as all they'd see is Shima's chakra whilst their sight is blocked by the large, thick cloud of dust. It's actually also potentially useful for burning anybody caught within its range, as the cloud is made of dust particles that can be combusted by a fire technique. Essentially, it'd achieve the same thing as Asuma Sarutobi's Ash Pile Burning technique [

Now some of the abilities that I've described for Shima should apply to Fukasaku here as well such as her leap, her sage perception, and her ability to summon all three boss toads. Likewise, some of the abilities that I will talk about here should apply to Shima. For one, Fukasaku has already been confirmed as practicioner of Frog Fu in the fourth databook, and seeing as how Shima is a perfect sage, she has this ability as well. Secondly, Fukasaku has shown the ability to

, and considering how both toad sages are able to stretch their tongues, they should probably be able to strech their limbs of necessary. Both toads have their strength greatly enhanced. The old guy was able to lift Bunta, a bijuu sized toad, and toss him over to where the paths of Pain were [

]. The dude could quite literally send any given shinobi flying in melee combat if they aren't careful. Also, since both are at the top of the hierarchical structure of Mt. Myoboku, and both are the most powerful and most versatile out of the toads in their village, Shima and Fukasaku should be able to spit large amounts of toad oil as Bunta and Jiraiya in Sage Mode can (Jiraiya can do this in base but he can't spit it out in large quantities as he can as a sage).

Observational Skills/Tactics

As I alluded to earlier in this post, Fukasaku is wise, perceptive, and tactically astute. He helped Jiraiya uncover the secrets of the Rinnegan, and has methods of creating good distractions and misdirections [

Not much to say here, since the effectiveness of the jutsu kind of speaks for itself as it was able to cut through steel pipes, solid bedrock, and the chameleon summon's flesh quite easily [

To be perfectly honest, this technique coupled with Fighting Tongue Sash or some of Jiraiya's other jutsus that I'll be outlining below = GG to most who don't have adequate defenses to counter.

These two requisites for the technique make it fully counterable, but with perfect execution of a good strategy like the one Jiraiya made against the three paths, this technique will surely be a game over to most opponents as it knocks them out completely. IV. Ninjutsu - Senjutsu - Collaboration Techniques

Lets now look at Jiraiya's very own jutsus, including several collaboration techniques involving his toad summons. Without a doubt, Jman has one of the most versatile jutsu arsenals in the entire manga, being highly skilled in a wide array of ninjutsu such as elemental techniques, sealing techniques, barrier ninjutsu, and his specialty, summonings. These jutsus can be utilized for multiple purposes, in multiple circumstances, and in multiple ways. The techniques Jiraiya has and uses are likely a product of his vast reserves of experience and tactical acumen, having been through a lot of different situations. Boasting firepower in spades as well as a set of great support techniques, I'd say that he is one of the best ninjutsu users in the entire manga as well. Furthermore, most of these techniques can be augmented by sage chakra, which obviously increase their power and effectiveness.

Fuuinjutsu

Jiraiya was very skilled at sealing techniques, and has two known jutsus that he showed in canon, and one that most people don't realize he has access to but most likely has, which is Orochimaru's Five Elements Seal. I would only deem the latter jutsu actually applicable to battle, though even then the opportunities of using this jutsu are slim. I will be listing them nonetheless as they are pretty cool.

Fuuka Houin (Fire Sealing Method)

This particular sealing techniques is capable of sealing something as potent as the black flames of Amaterasu, which makes it a pretty powerful fuuinjutsu. However, the utility for this technique in battle is severely limited as Jiraiya would have to pull the scroll out and weave hand seals to get rid of Amaterasu (which is way too fast to give Jiraiya time to do that), which leaves him wide open unless he has a clone do it. In regards to countering regular katon techniques, Jiraiya is one of the best katon users in the manga and has Bunta's suiton bullets to rely on as well, so this scroll isn't even necessary to begin with. Regardless, being able to seal the black flames is pretty nifty IMO.

Five Elements Unseal



Jiraiya used this technique to remove Orochimaru's five pronged seal from Naruto's stomach and restore his chakra control. This jutsu is mostly unimportant except for the fact that it confirms his ability to use Five Elements Seal. Note that Orochimaru

that removing his seal would be difficult for a Sannin, yet Jiraiya was still able to do it.

This technique is very useful if one is able to land it on an opponent as it disturbs their chakra flow and inhibits their ability and capacity to mould chakra, but unfortunately the chances of that happening aren't very high to say the least. Regardless, Jiraiya has access to this jutsu since knowing how to undo the five pronged seal would require knowledge on how said five pronged seal works and how it's executed, not to mention that these two techniques were probably created at around the same time due to being the opposite of each other. I would think that this technique is augmented by senjutsu chakra, so if SM Jiraiya were to hit you with this seal, then the opponent's ability to mould chakra would be severely handicapped, rendering them unable to battle at all rather than battle awkwardly and ineffectively.

Barrier Ninjutsu

, Jiraiya can create a sensing barrier that covers an extremely large space. Within this barrier, whatever hits or enters the sphere is immediately noticed, as it seems to give Jiraiya a form of precognition [

In one of these scans, Animal Path remarked that this sensing barrier would be capable of finding his camouflaged chameleon, which further confirms that this sensing barrier is physical based and tracks movement. Pretty amazing, right? Well, another great feature of this jutsu is it's sheer size.

This barrier is so large that it far surpasses a bijuu sized summon like Ken. In fact, to completely fill this sensing sphere, you'd have to put several Kens facing towards multiple dimensions. Furthermore, just imagine how larger this sphere would be augmented by sage chakra, which raises the scale of Jiraiya's techniques and his capacity to mould chakra. It could most likely cover very large portion of a battlefield, forcing an opponent to go to a range where the won't be able to attack him without entiring his sphere of influence. Coupled with his enhanced reflexes and Shima's tracking prowess as well as Fukasaku's sage perception, absolutely nothing will go on that these trio aren't aware of. If used with shadow clones, which can relay information between each other, Jiraiya can potentially cover an entire battlefield. Now this would be overkill as the sage toads are already perfect sensors, but Jiraiya in base can utilize this tactic to great effect. And before somebody points it out, yes I am aware of the sizing inconsistency with Ken during those chapters, but the fact of the matter is that Ken was ultimately portrayed to be bijuu sized, and Animal Path's summonings were all roughly on par with him in size, whilst the sensing barrier was clearly portrayed to far exceed that size.

This seemingly obscure technique is actually incredibly useful for hiding if Jiraiya needs to enter Sage Mode, or he could drag an opponent into the toad and leaving them there/push them into the toad's acidic stomach fluids. To accomplish the latter, he'd need to catch the opponent off guard, most likely achieved by utilizing misdirections or clone feints. In terms of dragging the opponent into the toad, I assume that the toad itself has a long tongue that can drag the opponent in, or Jiraiya himself could arguably use his hair to grab and reel the opponent in as well. If Jiriaya has summoned the sage toads or is already in Sage Mode, Shima can accomplish this as well by using her own tongue. This technique should be especially useful in an area where a plentiful water source is present. It's unknown how deadly the acid is, but an already dead body like Animal Path was rendered useless after jumping in once [

This jutsu would make good combinations with Swamp of the Underworld and Toad Mouth Bind to either knock the opponents into them, or to lay them out after they've been trapped. To use this jutsu, the caster must be able to get himself a good height above the target, so this is a nice two in one feat for Jiraiya, as it confirms his ability to leap high distances.

In addition, using this technique in conjunction with the next jutsu (Art of the Raging Lion's Mane) allows Jiraiya to extend its range as well.

I know that this technique isn't a katon, but I feel that it fits better here rather than in the Toad Ninjutsu section. Anyways, gamayudan is a very basic jutsu but can be used to great effect. It's a very sticky and adhesive fluid that impedes movement, and obviously it's also highly flammable. Using Gamayudan along with a katon on an opponent greatly increases its effect, and Jiraiya can actually make use of this on a battle field by spitting oil on the ground then lighting it on fire, closing off parts of the battlefield. Additionally, another one of mah' ninjas, the Trollkage (Second Mizukage), showed in canon that this substance is the perfect counter to Gaara's sand. In Sage Mode, the quantity of oil that Jiraiya can spit out is greatly increased, as he was able to spit out a small lake and fill an entire room (Senpou: Goemon).

Katon: Endan (Fire Release: Flame Bullet)

All of Jiraiya's fire techniques are enhanced by oil, giving himself an advantage over regular katon users in terms of the intensity and strength of the flames. These oil Endan variants also allow Jiraiya to spit out individual fireballs as noted in the databook entry above, or continuously stream fire like a flamethrower since the amount of fire created is proportional to the amount of oil Jiraiya fills his cavity with. Note that Jiraiya's skill with katon is so great that he doesn't need hand seals to perform it, and all of his fire jutsus are based off of the Endan, so he doesn't need seals to perform any of his fire techniques [

Anyways, this jutsu is an interesting inverse of Jiraiya's other katon based techniques, as here we see the fire fueling the oil rather than the oil fueling the fire. As I said before, Jiraiya's enhanced capacity to mould chakra allows him to use a much larger scaled version of Gamayudan, allowing him to fill a good portion of the entire room the paths and the toad sages were in. For good measure, Jiraiya on the ground is comfortably lower than the paths, who stand on top of a pile of rocks [

Without being hindered by the drug, a healthy base Jiraiya should have the ability to make a larger, deeper swamp with more adhesive and not half assed mud that restricts an opponents liberty of movement, and of course mud that sinks the opponent faster considering that Jiraiya was aiming to sink such a large summon. Enhanced with sage chakra, this swamp can very well cover and sink bijuu sized creatures easily. Well, this is completely untrue again, for the same reasons that I've already stated; the ground is turned into a very stick, very adhesive mud that greatly restricts the target's liberty of movement. Trying to tunnel through it would just result in the opponent being sunk in quicker lel.

This ends my analysis of Jiraiya's abilities. His skills, summonings, and power just in base makes him easily mid kage level. In Sage Mode he becomes a high kage level shinobi and on par with other ridiculously strong guys like Kisame in overall strength. As for the strongest opponents he can defeat, in base he can take on and beat mid tiered Akatsuki leveled opponents like Deidara, Kakuzu, and Sasori. In Sage Mode, it's my belief that he can beat every kage in existence except Hashirama, Naruto, Tobirama, Minato, and Ay, as well as everyone in the Akatsuki except Pain, Tobi, and healthy MS Itachi.

He mastered a few jutsu(s) does not make him a legit shinobi. He did not even know how to release himself from a Genjutsu until Jiraiya taught him over the time-skip. Jiraiya only brushed up on the skills he knew already, and had to teach him the basic fundamentals of being a ninja.

Which is why in PART 2 we see Naruto training in new skills, and developing his own techniques. While Sasuke already did that in his time-skip, we only see his new abilities coming from the MS which grants automatic abilities.
