Greedy, loud, self-serving, caustic, slightly charming, and arrogant, are good words to describe him. He can easily be swayed by the prospect of money, especially a sum that is larger than previously offered, a tactic frequently employed by his victims. However, history shows that he is more likely to take the money, after killing the mark. However cold, or brutal he may seem, he does appear to have a soft spot for children, and if a mark has a family, he'll personally deliver the child(ren) to an orphanage. His cowardice doesn't manifest itself as fear, rather, it manifests itself as pragmatism, doing anything an everything to preserve his own life at all costs, usually regardless of consequence
He once was in a relationship, with a commanding officer, after his discharge from the military, they maintained a platonic relationship. He keeps the diamond pendant he bought her among his most prized possessions, along with Elizabeth.

History:
Born in the Land of Lightning, to a pair of jōnin, his parents were frequently away on some sort of mission or another, making his relations with his caretakers better than with his parents themselves. The only concrete memory of his parents was his father's old blade, Elizabeth, which was passed down to him when he entered the Academy. Unfortunately his chakara reserves were naturally low, limiting him before he even began training. Even through his parents were rarely home, he still loves his parents dearly.
Upon graduation, he would join the military, following in his parent's footsteps. During this time, he was known to be a glory hound, and usually prioritized flamboyant and fancy tactics to make him seem like a more competent officer than he actually was.
This rather amused his handler at the time, and they quickly became friends. Their relation grew from platonic friendship to a full blown relationship, he spent a large sum of money on a diamond pendant for her.
He was more concerned with personal glory than success, much to the chagrin of his superiors, including his girlfriend, who was the one to usually clean up the messes he made, putting a strain on their relationship
After a particularly nasty mission protecting a dignitary, in which the dignitary was unintentionally killed by an explosive placed by Sanae, in an attempt lure his enemies into the building, only to have it blown out from under them. The plan failed spectacularly, ending with the dignitary killed in the explosion. When evidence that the explosive was his was discovered, he was put to death under charges of treason, as well as being dishonorably discharged from the military.
The day before his execution, he spoke with his former commanding officer, she stated that she could nothing to help him, except say that she was incapacitated, and didn't know anything about missing strategic maps, and had no idea how he escaped her watch. She also gave the pendant back, stating that "she never really like diamonds anyways"
Sanae escaped from death, and used the vast amounts of information on the maps to make a living as a mercenary, bodyguard, assassin, and on occasion, an enforcer for various crime groups.

This is my sword, it has extreme sentimental value to me, it's name is Elizabeth
Sanae's sword, which defies most conventional definitions of a sword. He has called his beloved blade a claymore, though it seems too wide for such a classification. What is certain, however, is that it is wickedly sharp, and surprisingly light for a sword of it's size (which isn't very). Sanae's uses for it range from it's intended purpose, as well as a makeshift shield, for blocking projectiles, using it's flat side as a blunt object, to using it as an axe to chop down trees for his camp. "Elizabeth"'s sheer weight makes single strikes easy to dodge, but a rapid series of slashes and chops is less so. He may also be inclined to strike with the flat of the blade to incapacitate or daze before
He frequently refers to his sword by pet names such as "darling" or "sweetie"
