I personally loved it. I have a thing for steampunk so that on top of the character development and relationships made this a great show for me. I'd recommend Last Exile for a similar steampunk genre show but with a more enjoyable story. Be sure it is Last Exile and not Last Exile: Fam the Silver Wind. I have not seen the latter and have heard unflattering things about it.

On the topic of Samurai 7, I watched the series dubbed and enjoyed the voice acting of the cast. It was done by Funimation, which I believe to always be reliable in regard to their English dubbing along with Aniplex. I'd say it's at least worth finishing as there are some plot points you may enjoy.
