Alright, so, a while ago I was thinking, and I may have come up with a conclusion about the Greatsword, Samehada. Considered the greatest of the Seven Swords of the Mist, people have generally given up on trying to find out anything more about this sword. Many of us have simply assumed that we know it all already. But what if I were to say that we were wrong to think that? Here, I'm going to try and explain why Samehada is sentient, why Kisame is blue and extremely shark-like, what Kisame's Samehada-fusion really is, along with a few other points. So here we go.
First of all, I'd like to start by asking why in the world is Samehada so much more powerful than every other sword? I mean, no other sword comes close to Samehada's power, and even the one that does, Chojuro's sword, could never fight against Samehada and expect to win. So why praise a single sword more than any other? Well, perhaps it was never meant to be so powerful. While brings me to the first point I wish to make, which revolves around the sword's Original Purpose. In order for anything else in my theory to be correct, we must first accept that what I believe to be Samehada's purpose is true, and if we accept my theory, the rest of what I'm going to talk about makes this make a lot more sense. So, here it is, Samehada's original purpose, according to me: collect Natural Energy.
So, we all know that Natural Energy is a special energy which is mixed with the usual Spiritual and Physical energies, normally used to make chakra, in order to make Senjutsu Chakra. And Natural Energy cannot be collect unless one remains still (or has Jugo's DNA). This being said, Sage Mode pre-dates Hidden Villages, as Hashirama could use it, and is not specifically bound to a single village, making it reasonable that there was someone who could utilize Natural Energy properly from the beginnings of Kirigakure. With that said, Kirigakure shinobi were amazing swordsmen, and so this shinobi would have been a very powerful person, being able to access Sage Mode, and therefore one of the original Seven Swordsmen of the Mist, wielding a sword which would make it easier to enter his signature Sage Mode from the time it was forged. And don't worry, it gets much more plausible that Samehada is what I think it is later.
So moving on into my actual theory, keeping in mind that Samehada absorbs Natural Energy (in my opinion), we come to my first point; why is Samehada sentient? Well, to answer this question, we'll go all the way back to Kabuto and, you guessed it, Snake Sage Mode. While fighting Itachi and Sasuke, Kabuto used a technique known as "
Now, many of you can probably guess where I'm going with this now, but for those of you who would like to finish reading this in my own words, I'll move on to why Kisame is blue, with gills, and other shark-like features. The answer is very simple; Imperfect
Moving on to a related note, Kisame's Samehada-Shark Fusion technique. What else can I say but that it's Kisame's VERY Imperfect Sage Mode. Just as Kabuto became a messed-up humanoid serpent, Kisame became a semi-humanoid Shark. It's very clear that Samehada disappears when Kisame does this, at least in the one instance we've seen it, and so we can tell that we have something similar to Jiraiya's "
Now, you're probably thinking "But we've seen Samehada being used, and it's not like this most of the time", and you're right. For, you see, I believe that at one point, one of Samehada's new wielders figured that if Samehada could absorb a portion of special chakra, that it could absorb full, normal chakra. And it did. The sword was put to use for beyond it's original purposes, draining chakra of everything it tore open. But because Natural Energy simply exists in the open, Samehada could absorb that easily; it needed to either tear open the body of a person, or wait for that chakra to be turned into a technique before it could be properly absorbed.
Another seeming "hole" in this theory is "How can you forge a sword designed to absorb Natural Energy?" Well, how would you forge a sword which absorbs iron from blood in order to repair itself (Zabuza's blade)? We've seen something similar to this done before, in Zabuza's sword, and so why couldn't this little variation be possible?
Now, despite what it may seem, I don't believe I'm very good at articulating things in this manner; I'm better at stating what I think, then letting people ask questions and answering those. So, please, ask away. If you think that something I said isn't quite right, I may very well have an answer to your question which I couldn't figure out how to work into this format. So please, feel free to either agree with me, ask questions, or both. Please don't simply say "ur rong, derp"; I want to hear why you think I'm wrong. Please explain yourself, and I'll further explain myself.
Now, for those who went "tl;dnr", I'll simplify it. Samehada absorbs Natural Energy, Kisame is a Sage Mode user, ask questions. That's basically what I said up there, except I have more explanation there than here.

". What does it do? Well, for those who can't remember, it simply allowed Kabuto to bring stalactites and stalagmites to life, and then control them through the utilization of Natural Energy. Now, assuming that what I think about Samehada's original purposes is true, that it was intended to gather and store Natural Energy, it would make sense that this sword would truly absorb some Natural Energy and provide itself with a form of "life-force". This also explains why Samehada randomly gained a mouth while fighting Killer Bee, while in Part I it was never displayed to have a mouth at all; the blade can become more and more life-like depending upon the amount of chakra it has, manipulating it's scales to act as teeth. (That last sentence was somewhat weak, but the rest is pretty solid.)Now, many of you can probably guess where I'm going with this now, but for those of you who would like to finish reading this in my own words, I'll move on to why Kisame is blue, with gills, and other shark-like features. . We have seen that Imperfect Sage Mode left Jiraiya with Toad-like features, such as a warty nose, a long, warty tongue, and webbed fingers, and god forbid if I have to tell you what happened to Orochimaru and Kabuto (though their features may not have directly been tied into Sage Mode, they both attempted dabbling in it before their features were altered to white skin, with actual scales for Kabuto; just saying). With that said, how is it so implausible that Kisame attempted to assimilate some of the Natural Energy gathered within his sword in order to attempt Sage Mode? And when his attempt resulted in and Imperfect Mode, he was left with shark-like features. This actually leads me into a secondary, tangent theory, which I'll touch on here; every Sage Mode has always reflected the user's Summoning Contract, with Jiraiya becoming Toad-like, Kabuto becoming Snake-like, and Kisame becoming Shark-like (assuming that he was, in fact, entering Sage Mode). Now, Natural Energy is the same everywhere, no matter how you absorb it. Because of this, it is quite obviously the contract one signed which alters the exact form of Sage Mode. To this point, it is unknown if Hashirama had a summoning of any kind, and he had a "Perfect" Sage Mode, as Naruto does, without any animal-like characteristics. This theory may also hint at the fact that a shinobi may only have signed one animal contract at a time, but that's not what I'm here to discuss today.Moving on to a related note, Kisame's Samehada-Shark Fusion technique. What else can I say but that it's Kisame's VERY Imperfect Sage Mode. Just as Kabuto became a messed-up humanoid serpent, Kisame became a semi-humanoid Shark. ". Here, we see Shima and Fukasaku fusing with Jiraiya in order to supply him with Natural Energy for Sage Mode. Samehada fuses with Kisame, via some unknown means, to supply him with whatever makes him a freaking shark-man. The similarities are very great here.
