I agree on the part that he screwed up with Sakura development many times and i think he said himself at some point that he wasn't good with the female characters in general. Thing is that with the way he presents stuff to us the only logical explanation and the one closest to reality is the possibility that the OP wrote. Apart from that there is the silly possibility of Suigetsu screwing up at some part with the sample and the test and i don't know what else he could do wrong, but i don't want to see that happening in the next chapter to be honest. I 'd rather a more sophisticated approach to this than a simple "00ps i messed up guys with the sample".

About DmC. You mean the reboot? With young Dante etc? If you mean that i didn't like it at all. I am more of a fan of the original story and setting of Devil May Cry series, with the best one imho being Devil May Cry 3. There is word out there that they are making Devil May Cry 5 and maybe the will do a DmC:2.
