Sakumo committed suicide when Kakashi was a genin. He decided to abandon his mission to save his comrades and became a pariah as a result.

I've never seen the reference, but many people say the canon states he being as strong as the sannin. He may have been a wolf sage or something lols.

There was just a scan of him with Kakashi, when Kakashi met Gai for the first time. So he obviously didn't die shortly after.

Since there is a rumor going around saying that after the kakashi anbu arc there will be no more filler we might not be able to see fillers about Sakumo. but if we are lucky Kishi might squeeze in some info about him in the manga somewhere.
