I didn't see Nagato relying on genjutsu and kenjutsu. In any case, the sage also had 5 weapons so he was skilled in them (not that he needed them). And he had fuinjutu strong enough to contain the juubi. He could be in a wheelchair and still take on most of the shinobi at once.
