Prior to his departure from the Leaf, Aizen appeared as a mild-featured man with brown scholarly hair enhanced by square glasses, along with soft brown eyes. As a member of the village elite shinobi and the Kazekages' advicer, he wore the standard uniform with a captain's haori. Also, he was thought of as a very quet and good looking man.
During his ascent to Sunagakure, he removed his glasses and swept his hand through his hair, revealing menacing eyes and a very different hairstyle; his hair is now swept back, with a strand hanging down his face.
In Suna, Aizen initially wears a white cloth over his shihakushō. After some time, Aizen wears full clothing similar in style to his underlings, complete with a pink sash around the waist.

Whenever confronted, Aizen is casual and uncaring, attempting to draw out a conversation and make small talk, which often infuriates those he is talking to.
Aizen initially appeared to be a very kind, well-respected shinobi and was looked up to by many, especially his student, Momo Hinamori. However, this was just a mask to disguise his manipulative, and very dangerous, nature. In truth, he cares very little for his underlings, and is willing to use almost everyone around him as pawns to achieve his goals. In his own words, Aizen claims to be unaffected by any form of morals or ethics, as he views them as mere restrictions on his potential. He is, therefore, willing to stop at nothing to further his selfish ambitions, including manipulating or killing anyone if he deems it to be necessary. He frequently appears to toy with his underlings for amusement. Unlike most of the other Shinobi, who generally have some form of honor and kindness, Aizen lacks genuine compassion and honor, and often says that's the part of his power.
During his time as an ANBU captain, Aizen was known to like tofu, but dislike boiled eggs. In his free time, he often read, and he also gave a special lecture of calligraphy at the Academy because he excelled in this branch of arts. This optional course was immensely popular among the Shinobi students, and many of them felt great sorrow at Aizen's sudden departure.

At an unknown point in the past, Aizen became part of the 5th ANBU squad under Captain Shinji Hirako. To this end, he sacrificed hundreds of Shinobi and hundreds of Konoha citizens who bore Shinobi talents to his own Hōgyoku - the stone that could increase his powers, but it was not satisfied with this. At one point, a young Gin Ichimaru watched Aizen meet with three other Shinobi who were kneeling before him. One of the Shiniobi handed Aizen the Hōgyoku, prompting Aizen to put the orb in a glass and hand it back to the Shinobi. Aizen and his subordinates left an unconscious friend of Gin's a short distance away.
Aizen eventually caught Shinji's attention, and was promoted to his asistant in order for Shinji to watch over him closely, but Shinji's action only helped further the realization of his plans.
With the disappearance of the 9th Squad, The Hokage called an emergency meeting and assembled a team to investigate. After coming into contact with the lifeless 9th Division members, the investigation team was dispatched by an unseen assailant. While the investigation team was still out searching Shunsui and some other Shinobi on guard saw someone whom they believed to be Aizen. Some time after that incident, Aizen was made the new captain of 5th squad and had more power in the village. As he was known for his wiseness, the Hokage often asked for his opinion in everything, thus giving him more information. Unfortunately for him, the Hokage dies and he's no longer in the position. Some time after that, he decides it's for the best if he left the leaf, so he could continue working on the Hogyoku. Since it was the best and safest, he moved to Sunagakure. The Kazekage heard about Aizen and instantly made him him assistant. Soon, Suna turned out to be not-so-good for his plans as Aizen originaly thought. There he met Gin Ichimaru, and decided to stay in the village a little longer. He taught Gin shinobi skills, and made him his underling.
Eventualy, Gin became a strong shinobi and a division captain.
