It was a power that he attained probably after his fight with Lee. He did not have serious battle until fighting Lee, probably after that he developed sand dome because he can not hold sand armor forever and have to fight with a hyped Uchiha. I was referring to Kimimaro battle btw.

What can Gaara do to Gai while sitting in a dome? Nothing. Gai does not have to fight him either and. He can react to those spikes btw, i don't think this is much up to debate. I would argue he breaks that dome, but no limits fallacy will come into play and i don't even want to bother...

He can do every single jutsu he has done before. Turns to desert, makes a tsunami and sends him 200m underground. He has a third eye that will monitor his every single move. Only way to break through this is probably by using Morning Peacock or Hirudora. Without he's not scratching it.

Because he could not protect Lee and fight from the dome at the same time. He didn't even sweat when creating desert, don't see why he should now.

Then the density would be smaller and requires much more effort, while he could penetrate his defense with his bones. I don't think so.
