That is entirely up to the human race.
Inventions like the Cotton Gin were heralded for their ability to increase individual productivity.
Let me ask you a question - if you had to write down everything you type - it would, generally, take you much longer to do it. Variations in your writing would also make it more difficult for others to read. The reason you type papers is because it is an all-together more effective means of producing something you want others to read. It saves you time, saves you effort (I doubt you'd even recognize a typewriter or know much about what a PITA those could be) - and means you can do more in the same amount of time or do the same in less time - freeing up time for you to do other things.
Human beings have better things to do than sit and toil about with levers to make a metal mill work. Computers can do that and can do it to a much higher degree of precision. That person can go on to apply their knowledge to make the machine more efficient or to oversee several machines doing the job that they would be.
The problem comes from people who do not want to adapt to the changing work environment. Rather than learning how they can adapt their skills, experience, knowledge, etc to increasing amounts of automation - they simply complain that they don't get to beat the same drum that they always have.
We don't need a guy to stand and drive rivets into a car. A machine can do most of that. There are some places where it's more cost effective to pay someone to get into those quirky spaces or where the 'dynamic touch' of human intuition is necessary - but you have much better things to aspire to in life than plinking away on an assembly line like a drone.
Think about that for a second. You are, essentially, arguing: "Hey, I want the job that a drone can do!"
I consider that to be one of the biggest insults to individual intelligence and sentience as a whole. Anyone who can only conceive of being a drone is merely a husk of a true being and should never be considered more human than the robot they contend with for a job.
Harsh words - but it's a harsh reality. The Hive will use and abuse - and those under its hypnosis will be miserable and enjoy every second of it.
