It's obvious Rin didn't die during time skip. Rin died before original Naruto took place. Kakashi hints at his former teammates dying. It happened between when Nine tails attacked and end of great ninja war. I'm guessing the writer doesn't know yet seeming as he's stalling for time with the telling.

Rin died because of Hatake Kakashi.He killed her because he knew she was important to the enemy.It was in the manga.I read about it.He killed her with the Chidori.
